Hey, just out of curiosity what is biggest engine size you have seen or got when you were 20 years old or your friends or relatives were? And I mean not as named driver but as primary owner driver. I heard it's 1.6 max until you are like 22 or 24, not sure. But is that true?

I'm sure you could insure pretty much anything at 17 if your pockets were deep enough.

I know of several 20 year olds that were insuring 2.5+. They paid silly money for the privilege though.

    I had a 2.5 litre car when I was 18 and Ive been driving a 3 litre since I was 20 , both insured for under 2 grand, and im not alone , got a quote for 1150 on a 4 litre 5 series BMW , Im 22 .

If you shop around and dont pick really high risk cars (anything jap import / sportscars) you can get away with something affordable and large engined.

my pockets are very deep, but ... empty :pac:

Brokers may get insurance , but excess will be high, on my skyline i had 4k excess., but got insurance disk for 2100 euro - first car in Ireland , but was 25 years old , with EU license.:) will think twice, before mess around :)

edit: try Lexus 400 01-02... they not bad for insurance, i know one guy, got descent price on it... for 4 liter engine :)

When I was 17, one of my mates from my class in highschool got Opel Vectra 2.5 petrol 170BHP. Vectra was 1993, but this was in 1999, so car was only 6 years old.
This was a time we were all passing our driving test, so actually it was his first car. He used to drive to school in it everyday. I drove it few times then, and I thought it was an absolute monster when it comes to power, as at that time I was driving my dad's Cinquecento 0.7 litre 30BHP.

Alot of insurance companies also use bhp as criteria when appraising risk assessment, it's not just engine size especially these days when you have more and more small capacity engines with turbos and supercharges. For example I'm sure you would find it hard at that age to get insurance on a Golf with the 170bhp 1.4 TSi engine too.

Who is the named policy holder though? Alot of young lads get a parent to be the policy holder and them added as a named driver for cheaper insurance.

My first car was 2.0 at age 20 on provisional. Insurance was 600 cheaper than 1.25 Fiesta and 1.0 Punto.

Why? Because it was 76bhp non turbo diesel. Engine size isn't everything. (unless your talking to Hibernian)

thats only license + the 17=21 danger factor...

most of my friends had audi 80 carina etc with 1.6-2.2 petrol and diesel no problem really just so long as they had full license and atleast 1 ncb.

At 18 I had a 1970 vg valiant with a 265 cubic inch 6. Nothing unusual for nz. Insurance not required and road tax the same on all engine sizes. 265 cu is about 4.2 litre. Not that powerful by today's standards tho

The Insurance Grouping will matter a lot more than the engine size.

I bet you can get insured on a 3.0l Mitsubishi Pajero or a 530i barge easier than a 1.4 civic :)

If you pick something thats a bit of a sleeper / low risk (statistically) you get away with a bigger engine / more power
