Hey guys, another query on this course. Is there any optional year abroad with this? My daughter is looking at this and media studies in Maynooth and she has been told that there's an option after second year with Maynooth to study abroad. Also, is there any INTRA placement with communications in DCU? I know there is with most of the other courses, but couldn't find any info on this..

Any help on this would be great.. Very stressed thinking about costs and everything and want to ensure she thinks through all the options. thanks so much

Hey, I have friends in this course. I'm pretty sure there is no INTRA. Afaik there used to be but they got rid of it and made the course 3 years long.

They're all the modules that are done on the course.. exclude the one in 4th year - that's irrelevant for now, as there is no 4th year! There is, however, no intra or year abroad with communications. Your daughter will have so many oppurtunities to garner experience throughout her 3 years.. most communication students take part in DCU radio (almost every1 gets a shot at a show for a semester). Students can also make use of the film cameras and sound equipment on campus to make their own documentaries, short films and news programmes for DCUtv, or just to submit in competitions.

Great thanks for the info :) Do you know if Eramus is on offer for this course and what that entails? I know she'd love to do a year abroad and her course choices are spread between DCU and UCD now, but there's no built in year away with them, but I was wondering if this may be an option? Any info would be really appreciated. Thanks again : )

Erasmus can be done on any course, in any year (usually third though).

However, your daughter will have to organise everything herself, since it's not part of her course, she will also have to defer her year (which ever year she decides to take out).

Some lecturers or the SU may give help, but most work, in regards to the organisation, will have to be undertaken by your daughter. I'm doing an obligatory Erasmus year, as it is part of my course. We have a coordinator who organises and sets up our course in the college we wish to attend.

There are Erasmus grants available (only for countries in the EU) to cover the costs of flights etc. They usually amount to in or around 1200 but the year in general can be quite costly. I've already started saving for mine. If your daughter ends up being eligible for the Subsidised accommodation, her accommodation will not be paid for her when she goes abroad, she will however receive 1000 off of the Access service. Your daughter will have to pay for the accommodation herself, it's usually somewhat cheaper in foreign countries. The accommodation in Ireland is one of the highest in Europe. Your daughter will be limited to English speaking countries, unless she is willing to attempt a new language while she's abroad, as she will be taking modules through the language of the country she intends on going to. That's what will be happening to me. There are places like the US and Australia, to which she can go, however since they're not part of the EU, she won't receive a grant. The UK is always an option. (Some colleges in Europe do offer some modules in English, however, they may not be suited to your daughters course)

**Your daughter will still receive her Maintenance grant if she does Erasmus.

Cardor, thanks so much for the info. That's good to hear that she would still get the maintenance grant and that it may be possible to defer a year and include Erasmus. She has taken honours level French and seems to really enjoy that, but I think for communications it's available only in third year (I'll have to check that though). It would be a great opportunity if she could incorporate a year abroad as part of her degree. Thanks so much for the info, really appreciate the help : )
