    Hi
Not sure if this is correct forum??

S=Daughter's samsung camera battery has died.
    Camera is only worth €100.
Camera shops wants €45 for new battery and says cheap ones (£6) on amazon / ebay are muck..
Any opinions on these 'cheapo' batteries?

Yes, they usually are pretty poor. They'll work, but they're manufactured to a much lower standard, will hold less charge than your original battery and will be more likely to die.

Best thing to do is try to pick up a legitimate one online, for a lower price than the shop is charging.

Oh and one other thing - most of these batteries don't properly report charge levels to the camera.

So your camera might show full-charge right up to the point when the battery dies. My spare battery does this and it's quite annoying.

died how exactly? if it wasn't used for a while and now won't charge itself In the charger, I might be able to help

Usually id agree about them being pretty poor (gotten them for old cameras and phones) Find the odd gem sometimes though. Picked up a cheap spare for my D90 and it lasts as long as my official one(for how long is another question.6 good months so far!). Worth a try for a few euro and see if youre happy imo

I've used cheapo ebay batteries in my D80 and D300 for years and they seem every bit as good as OEM's.

probably an old wives tale - someone told me that if you have a dead battery, wrap it up in a bag well and chuck it in the freezer for a day. i've never tried it, and i'm dubious about it, but maybe it can't hurt to try?

Amazon's yer man! You could well pick up a genuine one for a decent price. Watch the postage charges though!

Incidentally, the camera shop WOULD say that the cheap one sold by someone else is muck. they are hoping for a sale.

anyways, if its just not charging at all, it might be quite fixable. but if not.. buy the cheap one anyway. or buy three maybe?
dont spend 8 times as much on an oem battery anyway. Id bet all the money in my pocket against all the money in your pocket that 8 cheap ones would take a LOT more photos than one good one ;)

i have never bought a 'cheapo' battery on e-bay that wasn't as good or better than the manufacturer's original and that includes canon, fuji, panasonic, toshiba and samsung.

    they're pulling yer leg.

Yup, it works sometimes, I've done it a few times with different batteries for airsoft guns and the likes. sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It's all about cell memory. If a battery is discharged below a certain limit, it won't recharge, as it "remembers" this voltage or charge and more or less shuts off. But by freezing it overnight the cold refreshes everything and can sometimes allow it to take a full charge again.

Short answer: Get one on eBay.

Yes I have. Most of them are fine. A small minority of them are
indeed muck. Read the sellers feedback carefully. If someone sells
thousands of batteries and more than 99.5% of the customers are
happy, you can be fairly sure they aren't selling muck.

I have several eBay batteries for my two Canon DSLRs. All of
them perform at least as well as the Canon branded originals.

If you want the reassurance of a known brand name, buy a
branded, Energizer, Duracell or Hahnel battery. Guaranteed
good quality. More expensive than the generic ones on eBay,
but still cheaper than the camera shop.

Duracell sell replacements for most camera batteries online - prices are reasonable and there is no delivery charge unless you opt for a fast delivery. I've just ordered a couple.

Yeah, shops will say anything about online stuff being cheap worthless products and not to buy them just hoping you will buy it off them instead

Its the same with memory cards, for example, a 32 gb SDHC scan disk extreme pro 95 mbps costs 299 euro in the shops (on average) but you can find them online for 70 euro. Same brand and everything, when I told your man in the shop about that he said that you can't trust those products as they are normally not original scandisk products and that the people selling them just put a sticker on them and sell them as the original stuff.

Unfortunately you can't trust some sellers

Agree, look up the users feedback searching for the feedback for the battery you want and most ebay users write about the product quality etc in the feedback.
