15z? D: No. Go for the 15 instead. The whole "z" part of it may look pretty, but no. Plus, the normal XPS 15 has a better screen as compared to the 15z, even though they may both be 1080p, they differ in quality, with the latter being much better xD

I'm a massive Dell fiend, I've a XPS 17 at home that I use the whole time, I recently got my wife a 13z and I also have an Alienware desktop for games. My main reason for getting them is their service, something breaks they'll have someone out to you the next day to fix it, once my laptop broke when I was travelling for work and they got a local person to fix it for me, top class.

Which model are you looking at ?

On the other hand , there are a few discount coupons available for Dell products.

...Did you read le specs? It's not just that :3

    In comparison;

Newer CPU's: The 15z uses previous gen CPUs while the 15 that's refreshed carries the new Ivy Bridge ones. Sure they're slightly lower clocked, but improved battery life. Big plus tbh.

Better sound: In many comparisons against other laptops, the 15z being one of 'em, the XPS 15 has better speakers. Though this may not be one to go on as some can just plug headphones in.

Hard Drive: The new XPS 15 has a hybrid drive. I'll assume, like Samsung, they use that to make boot times akin to having an SSD whilst still maintaining the large storage capabilities of a normal HDD. Sure you can get something similar and replace the drive on the 15z, but that'll set you back over E150

Better graphics card: The Nvidia GT525M against the newer generation GT640M, which is only 7% slower than the GTX560M, which puts it far ahead of the 525M

RAM: The XPS 15 comes with DDR3-1600 as standard, as compared to the lower clocked 1333mhz of the 15z

    USB 3.0: Need I explain?

And to top it all off, a screen that can compete, if not beat the one on a the standard Macbook Pro.

I'm glad you did hold off with your search for a new laptop before though. I'm not much of a Dell fanboy but this is one pretty awesome machine xD

True what dell 15 do you think i should go for ? and do ya know where i could get a Sleeve too fit it ?

    dell latitude E6410

Must be a dud as I have one of those and it is pretty okay. Charger and some malware issues but other than that nothing bad to report. Doesn't have hdmi but then it is a worky laptop.

I have aspirations for a Lenovo ultrabook or other with HD screen, SSD and and 3rd gen Ivy bridge chip.

Wouldn't personally buy a Dell as the old desktop decided every year to ditch a part.

Tbh, I'd say go with the base model. The i5 is more than enough, and a 750GB hard drive at 7,200RPM > 1TB hard drive at 5,400RPM.

Dell are a waste of money.Terrible build quality, overpriced and awful customer service if anything ever goes wrong.Keep away from them.

What are you going to use it for? For 1400 euro you could afford a pretty decent custom one.

If you ask over here they'll point you in the right direction. For 1400 you should be able to get a very good laptop.I've never gone the custom route myself but if you want something tailormade to your exact needs and you're spending that much money on one it seems like the best option.

yeah i think dell are very hit and miss. for me it's been a miss. the first board, it was just something different about it for weeks. IT in TCD tried to convince me I was imagining it until one day the laptop just died. thank god i had just backed up.

second board, my touchpad mouse just constantly stopped working. and then one day it just died again. flashing lights etc. however when i dropped it into IT it would work again! so took three weeks before IT would believe me that the laptop wasn't working correctly...

There are a fair few around. Like Deviltech and the other German ones like Schenker. They're rebrands of Clevo laptops, but seriously now, point me towards a config that could match what the XPS has. And I don't mean like a part for part kinda basis, because that's easy to beat, but in terms of reproducing quality akin to the XPS 15 with regards to balancing aesthetics and performance? Not entirely.
It's a premium product, hence priced as so. Hell you could get specs of a Macbook Pro for under a grand easily. But the other frills that come with it like it's aesthetics and their service towards customers apparently warrant a higher price. *shrug*

Very much so agreed with hit and miss. Experiences vary from people saying "ERMARHGERHD NO" to "GET IT NAO". Though, there's an option where at a rather small fee on top of the laptop, you can avail of them sending someone to your door the next business day (I think) to try and help fix whatever it is that's wrong, as long as it's not too harrowing.

Otherwise they'll suggest that they send 'em over to the big boys somewhere else.

if a board goes it doesn't matter if you have backed up - your data is on the hard drive -- sounds like the problem was tcd IT not knowing what there are doing.

If anything goes wrong they send someone out to you, you can't beat that rather that then being down a laptop for 2 weeks, send it away somewhere and the pricks wipe your hard drive because it's procedure. For that reason Dell beat a hell of alot of other competitors
