Hi, I've seen a few old threads on gabions and didn't want to ressurrect them. I'm looking at a few options for a retaining wall, approx 4-5 ft high, and am interested in gabions (steel mesh containers with stone infill). I'm aware of other options and of the companies that I need to contact, I really just want to see if anyone on here has used them in a domestic situation and how did they turn out? any opinions or advice?

What are you retaining? how high is it? what material are you retaining? Is there a structure close to the cut you are retaining? What the footing like? Just some additional questions to help a informed decision to be made so as you my get the most accurate advice, Can you afford to loose the room to the Gabion??

Have used them once before. They're OK, but you need to choose the stone fill carefully, and you need someone who has carried out that type of work before to fill them for you in order to get the best possible look as it takes a bit of care, and is not just a case of chyucking loose stone into a basket. Interestingly, I had a small retaining job to do recently on an earther bank at the side of a new house and suggested using gabions to the engineer. He thought it would be just as economical to build a block retaining wall which is what we did in the end.

    Hi, Thanks.
Retaining an earth bank, approx 4-5 ft high. The bank has been there for a couple of years and hasn't budged, the wall is more or less to "face" the bank, it's near the house but subsidence is not an issue. A footing would need to be poured I presume and space is not an issue, have loads! The old photo attached shows the bank to the left of the garage, the plan would be to slope the earth from the top of the retaining structure back to about 7-8 ft high per the natural fall of the land...

gabions can be expensive and useless if not done by those who have done them before. They are slow to fill and compact correctly and can stain if they get any water run off. I would advise you to look at alternatives like the tobermore secura retaining wall or something similar. Easy to install with a nice range of finishes

no association with this or any similar company
