Has anyone ever been successful getting an upgrade on Aer Lingus, united or continental. Planning to fly to LAX soon and it would be nice even if it was only until we stopped over somewhere in america. Can you buy them for a reasonable price and are they worth it.
    Thanks

Expect to pay full price if you want to sit in the nice seats. Aer Lingus used to do occasional cheap upgrades to business class but haven't really offered it for sometime. Delta and United offer economy seats with more legroom on some of their aircraft, again for a price.

But don't be afrraid to ask for an upgarde at every opurtunity

    At the check-in desk
    At the gate
At the transfer/arline desk at you transfer airport.
At the gate of your transfer airport

Dress well, be presentable and be polite, it sometimes works.

They are only worth it if it's a freebie imo. I wouldn't pay for an upgrade or a Business class ticket out of my own pocket.

I've flown BA Narita-LHR and on both occasions have been bumped up to Premium Economy.

Flew to JFK with AA in Christmas 2009 and was bumped to Business at the gate, after asking at check-in.
