    Hi all,

For the past 8 years I've had one of these:

    h140%20big.jpg

I dropped it on the floor a few weeks ago and it seems to be dead, so I'm looking to get a new mp3 player.

I was considering the 160gb iPod Classic, but I really, really hate iTunes, and I'd love to get something that, like the iRiver, was recognised as a simple external storage device and let you just drag and drop your files and organise them into folders whatever way you wanted, without having to worry about all the embedded information (title, artist, album, genre, blahblah) that programs like iTunes pick up on and use to sort your music for you.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

You can get programs that will allow you to use your iPod without iTunes. It's certainly my plan to do that.

You may want to check Cowon/iAudio lineup (http://www.cowonglobal.com). We've had several models between us in the house and their sound quality and build quality is excellent. I am still using my iAudio u2, which is now 8 years old (wow! just realised that) and still going strong; beautiful deep sound.
You can get them on Amazon UK.

how many gb do you need?
if 72gb is enough for you I'd recommend a sansa zip and a 64gb micro sd card.
that way, if you ever break the player you still have the sd card.
sansa zip is very small but I consider that an advantage personally.
