Rear Brake pads - how much to replace them?

I was getting the car serviced this week (Advance Pitstop) and I was told that the (Golf Mark V) rear break pads need replacing. I was quoted €100 inc VAT.

Might sound cheap but from what I see it's a fairly straight forward job and with the right equipment should not take any longer than an hour. Given that a set of rear brake pads costs in the region of 25 quid for a Golf, me thinks it's a bit on the high side.

Normally, how much should it cost?

Assuming its a normal petrol/diesel golf then rear pads should be no more then €70-€75 for quality pads fitted by a reputable independant garage.

It might be worth your while doing a search on here for some opinions of advance pitstop before you commit.

I wouldn't normally comment/bad mouth any other garage but I had an example from them in earlier this week that left me dumbfounded!

We can supply and fit a set of pads from VW's own economy range for €65 inc VAT so €100 is pretty steep if you ask me.

As I thought. I wouldn't be rushing back to Advance Pitstop anyhow.... after failing to get me to replace the breaks he mentioned that the spare tyre needs replacing. 9 years old apparently... It would fail the NCT apparently.... Funny that, as the car passed the NCT in January

When I think about it, I wouldn't be very confident that a service was done at all  I could check if an air filter was fitted fairly handy; I doubt I can check if the oil was replaced??

Tyre age is an advisory on the NCT, not a fail.

Did they advise on scheduled items like timing belt or brake fluid? Did you get your service book stamped?

Depending on which engine you have you could check if a new oil filter is fitted pretty handy too.

Its too easy for me to be seen as bias so I won't go into it. Suffice to say it graphically illustrated the criticism's that have been floating around about them recently, both on Boards and elsewhere.

Micks Garage have a sale on brake pads - http://www.micksgarage.com/braking-parts/brake-pads/volkswagen/golf/golf-v/2003-onwards/1.4-16v/17278/

Any comments? I'm thinking of purchasing a set of fronts and rears and have someone fit same. However, I'm not sure if all the available pads are suitable for the car I have? (Based on the number plate entered the link above is recommended - car is VW Golf 1.4 75BHP BTW).

40/50 labour + pads, 100 is a bit high imo.

The first pad in the list is the correct type for the front of your car. The bottom one is the rear type.

However I wouldn't fit QH pads to any car of mine even if you gave them to me for free.

I paid 45e for rear pads and fitting on a mazda6.

My preference would be for genuine VW pads. That is what I would fit if it was my car. They are around €60 ex VAT IIRC.

VW also do a cheaper version pad for them as well. Around €45 ex VAT.

You can also get pads from a good quality OE supplier such as Ferodo, Pagid, Jurid etc which will be a bit cheaper again but will also be decent quality.

I would be absolutely amazed if they inspected the brake pads.

Whats the betting if you took them off and inspected them that they'd be fine.

The rears can be inspected (have alloys). They are well wore. There's c4-5 mm left. As for the fronts, I don't know.

You can't inspect the brake properly without removing the wheels as you can't see the inside pads.

Even if they are for the car, they might not fit. I have a set here just like that. Absolute crap
