    Hi everyone,
I am new to cycling and want to but a decent road bike. My budget is around 1000e. I was looking at the Trek 1.5 or similar but the shop I went into recommended I get the Thompson R 7200 as they are "a much stiffer bike with better components". Has anyone heard of or ever owned a Thompson bike?

They are a small company from Belgium. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am not familar with this company.
    Thanks in advance.
    Sean.

I'm getting Tiagra , I think Thompson has all Tiagra, brakes etc while the Trek has only some Tiagra gear

I ordered a Cube Peloton Race yesterday, and it's mostly 105 gear with Ultegra on the back.
Paid €1050 for it and it seems pretty good value.

The Thompson bikes do look good. Smooth welds.

Tiagra in its latest release gets excellent reviews putting it alongside the previous version of 105. If thE Thompson has a full set all the better.

Trek and Giant mix up gruppos to get to a price point.

Btw if it's the shop I think you were in they are very helpful and provide excellent advice. I notice they have a few other smaller / niche brands in stock which differentiates them from others who seem to flog only the big name mass produced kit.

I found the shop to be very very helpful and offered alot of practical sound advise, which made logical sense to me. My only concern is I have never heard of this Thompson before. The components are better on the Thompson , the bike is much stiffer and it looks the part also, I'm just looking to see if anyone has any experience of Thompson. Tnx

i doubt anyone has one (apart from round that area) looking at their website they are belgian (probably a good sign ?) and they have no stockists outside belgium. sponsor 2 teams

i guess as long as the shop is prepared to stand over them with a decent frame warranty. (my focus only had 2 years)

The usual caveats that apply to buying a non mainstream brand are parts availability and resale value, with the bike you are interested in most of the parts seem to be fairly standard, possibly the only thing that might catch you out would be the rear derailleur hanger if it's frame specific.

How you treat resale value is up to you, if you are sure you have no intention of wanting to upgrade then it doesn't really matter but if you did need to then lack of brand recognition could hurt you in your pocket.

    Hey Soarer,
Where did you order your bike from? I'm size 53 and cannot locate this bike anywhere. They seem really great value with 105/ ultegra
    Thanks Sean
