Footpad?

I was recently reading through the thread on the Irish Times cycling feature. Someone quoted a letter complaining about cyclists using the 'pavement'. They complained about them being West Brits and claimed that the correct term is FOOTPAD.

Surely the correct term is footpath? Unless I am missing something in the secret a language of cyclists?

    http://www.thefreedictionary.com/_/dict.aspx?word=footpad

Just curious, because I have seen it used quite a bit on this form. :-)

I think it originated in this thread a couple of years ago and has been a running joke since

    Thanks!

I was very confused. Feeling a mixture of embarrassment and relief now.

Got this from Wiki, apparantly they were medieval cyclists that stole from pedestrians.
Quote: A footpad is an archaic term for a robber or thief specializing in pedestrian victims

Don't be, boards is full of weird in-jokes, the cycling forum is no different.

Now I'm off to pedal my plane backwards on a treadmill, I wonder if I'll take off...

And here is the cycling forum thread it prompted

Looks like there was some resistence to use of the term at the outset
