Variable stars - luminosity v period

Me again, you will get sick of it.

Why is there a link between the period of a variable star and its luminosity, such that you can calculate luminosity based on period?

I understand how luminosity varies as the star size changes. Is it impossible to have two stars with the same period but with different luminosities? Why? Is there only a single set of star conditions that can lead to a single period, thus the luminosity MUST be the same?
