Can someone please recommend what are my options for getting an external flash for a Sony A350?

    Sony themselves have three flashes:

Two full sized and fully featured:

    Sony HVL-F43AM (http://www.connscameras.ie/sony-hvlf43am-external-flash/4905524747867pd.html)
    Sony HVL-F58AM (http://www.connscameras.ie/sony-hvlf58am-flashgun/4905524359367pd.html)

    And this pocket one:

    HVL-F20AM (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-HVL-F20AM-Compact-Flash-Gun/dp/B002DM6H2I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1340802133&sr=8-2)

I have both the and HVL-F43AM the HVL-F20AM. The F43AM is great. It's even weather-sealed (although all you'd get is white dots shooing a flash in the rain!), and has a really useful and quick two-axis rotating head that allows you to bounce the flash even in Portrait mode.

The F20AM is basically just a slightly more powerful upgrade to the built-in flash, but it does allow you to bounce. It's a handy little yoke, but has no buttons or settings on it.

The F58AM is basically a bigger and more powerful 9and more expensive) version of the 43, but without weather-sealing. Personally, I'd recommend the F43AM. It does everything I'd ever want it to do, and is very well made.

Sony also do a Macro Twin Flash (expensive, but well regarded), and a Macro Light (not a flash, and not well regarded.

Sony uses a proprietary mount for their flashes (the old Minolta mount), so if getting a third party flash, be sure it's a Sony compatible one.

Sigma do Sony versions of their 3 flashes:

I have the Sigma Macro Flash, and it's served me well. I also have two copies of their EF-530 DG Super (an older flash superseded by the 610 DG Super), and both have given me trouble. One has been back for warranty repair twice, and still doesn't work. So I've given up on them, and just use the Sony now. The Sigmas are much cheaper than the Sonys.

Metz do very well regarded Sony versions too (see their "Fully dedicated models"):

But I have no personal experience of them. Anything I've read about them on forums has been overwhelmingly positive.

There's a few other third parties like Sunpak that do them too, but again,i have no experience of these.
