There are three campsites down in Salthill, all beside each other there's a chance you'll get a spot there if you head down early enough. A good few campers park on the prom of Salthill too could be another option...

My guess is that there will be quite a few campers parked up along the prom in Salthill. It wouldn't quite be my cup of tea for an overnight as there will be traffic passing constantly.

Two possible options just off the prom would be outside the entrance to Leisureland http://goo.gl/maps/NGwm

and the other would be in at the Galway Business School http://goo.gl/maps/URZj

Closer to town you could try the Dyke road car park http://goo.gl/maps/Kzag
Just make sure you approach from the town side as there is a low bridge further out the road. It would be about a 5-10 minute walk from here to the docks.

I've seen campers overnight in all these locations but Caveat Emptor and all that.
