Best paint to use for ash wood

What would be the best type of paint to use for ash wood? I have a few hurleys I need to paint black but I don't want to waste any money going the "trial and error" route. The cheaper the better, but, obviously, I don't want it to chip or scratch too easily or come off in people's hands.
