Hi all, I was just wondering can anyone explain how FETAC results are used? is it so many distinctions for one course or are they calculated as points and added to your leaving cert points? It was not made very clear to us in the college I attended..

It depends for level 8 it is usually a certain amount of distinctions ( 3 or more)

level 7 and 6 is usually points

You add up your best 8 modules- you get 50 points for a distinction, 35 for a merit and 20 I think for a pass. Then you compete in the normal points system. Most Level 8s that you can go directly into require a minimum of three distinctions some even specify modules. Most level 6 and level 7s just work on points. Some courses have required specific awards in the past but a lot of level 6 and 7s are more open to what awards they accept now.

So i cant add up my best 8 modules and use it as points to gain entry into a Level 8 course just Level 7's?

There are two systems for progression from Level 5 onto third level - Higher Education Links Scheme (HELS) and the Pilot Scheme

The HELS is used to link certain Level 5 courses with certain Level 8s e.g. Pre-Nursing with the Nursing degree. To gain entry into the Level 8, you need a certain amount of distinctions in certain modules in order to compete for a limited number of places reserved for FETAC students on that course. In reality, what this means is that you need all distinctions to be in with a chance.

The Pilot Scheme allows you to convert FETAC module results into CAO points for entry into courses in colleges operating the scheme (ITs). You compete with LC students. Pilot Scheme points cannot be used to get into courses under the HELS.

Is it the same points requirement as the Leaving Certs or do the colleges have different minimum points for FETAC students?

If you are talking about the Pilot Scheme, then yes. Using your FETAC points, you are competing for places with LC students.
