Out of RTE 1 & 2, TG4 and TV3 which one do you think is the worst?

Personally it would be between TG4 and TV3 for me, but because TG4 promotes are native language I would have to deem TV3 the worst.

Choose carefully, the channel with the most votes will be destroyed.

Ireland's Worst TV Channel 374 votes

    RTE 1
    0% 0 votes
    RTE 2
    13% 52 votes
    TV3
    5% 19 votes
    TG4
    81% 303 votes

the only way to find out is if everyone here would actually sit down in front of there TVs and watch each channel for one 24hr period at a time,

i honestly dont think i could bring myself to watch over 3 hours of any terrestrial channel,

To be fair RTE has got some good shows and the sports on it is pretty good too. I'd say it's better then most other countries terrestrial channels.

RTE One, theres never anything entertaining on it and they still show the angelus on it before the news.

Also, nobody watches TG4 but were all afraid to admit its crap.

EDIT: RTE Two is probably my favourite channel, its in there with E4 and Sky Sports F1 HD anyway. It has some really good stuff, Love/Hate, Republic of telly, The Savage Eye.

Jesus, those threads - first one had over 4,000 posts in less than 2 weeks!

TV3 for me aswell for their shameless regurgitation of shows such as "Are you better off on the Dole", X Factor etc etc. It is the tabloid of TV channels

    Do ya promise???? :D

Hard to pick one as they're all sh!te in their own way, but having to pick just one - has to be RTE1. Just a waste of air time!

Too easy to attack TV3. They do ok-ish for the limited budget they operate on. There's a lot of cheap crud like 'Dublin Housewives' but at the same time, I can raise you a 'Fade Street'.

RTE get 90-95% of the licence fee, advertising revenue, the backing of the government and STILL incur huge losses. This cosy cartel irritates me a whole lot more than TV3, which actually has to be fiscally responsible and provide programming according to its budget.

I vote RTE2, its only good for sport. That's it.

TG4 has good stuff, very good documentary on separate murders of two Jewish men in Dublin in 1923 this evening. TV3/e cut their cloth so I had to turn off when xpose came on and go back later for the kind of stuff that Sky used to put on 9ish. RTE I'd only bother with for the lovely Mary Kennedy on Nationwide, she's got some colour back in her cheeks since they let her out of the studio :)

Let's be fair, they are all pretty ****. It's like trying to decide whose piss is the most piss like.

Who´s voted RTE? Sure it could be better but at least there´s home grown stuff.

TV3 is just one banality after another. Vacuous imported trash.

The only Irish stuff I´ve seen on TV3 is sensationalist hackneyed muck, like Cocaine Wars (based on grade-A bellend Mick McCaffrey´s piece of crap book) or that rubbish on dogging.

Budget is no excuse. I´d be willing to overlook their piss-poor production values if they actually had some subject matter that wasn´t completely retarded.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 327 ✭✭DuckStab

What's wrong with TG4? Considering the miniscule budget they have they produce some pretty decent programming, not to mention the overseas shows they had the initiative to import like Oz (before Channel 4), The Wire (years before any other station), Breaking Bad etc. They've done more for the Irish language than any of the other channels (not to mention the stagnant education system), and although that's regarded as irrelevant by many, I feel it's important.
And admittedly a geeky thing to say but it also has by far the best, most creative idents out of all the channels. Oh and some gorgeous womenfolk too :)

I have deleted TV3 from my Sat receiver, its a joke of a channel

TV3 is a toilet. It's has all the sensibilities of The Sun newspaper with the budget of the Tallaght Echo.

Came to register my utter hatred and loathing for all things TV3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,850 ✭✭✭FouxDaFaFa

I don't get the hate for tg4, I think it's the best channel we have by a long shot. First to import shows like The Wire and Breaking Bad, great documentaries and sports coverage, decent soap (Ros na Rún) and lots of fun shows that they somehow manage to make with no budget (Paisean Faisean, O tholg go tolg, Daithí ar Route 66).

tv3 is probably the worst for me because they're lazy. Lots of repeats and shows taken from itv. Although, to be honest, I would have more sympathy for them than rte. rte have such money and resources at their disposal and they fall short.

TV3 by a country mile, at least the rest try and serve all sections of society. TV3 have gone down the Talifornia/Xpose route and in my opinion that is that in regard to the entire channel, would not loose any sleep if the BCI withdrew TV3's licence and it was replaced by UTV on the sky epg.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,116 ✭✭✭starviewadams

RTE2,besides the football everything they show is either imported British/American garbage or home made (usually involving a Seoige or Craig Doyle) garbage.

TG4 showed Breaking Bad and The Wire for the first time over here, plus they have some interesting documentary's from time to time so they're okay by me.

RTE1 is just the nepotism and old boys club, have no time for it.

Only thing I watch on TV3 is Vincent Browne, but I've nothing against whatever output they have because it's not massively funded by the taxpayer.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,917 ✭✭✭✭iguana

TG4 is a fantastic channel, especially considering their budget, and I say that as someone's who's Irish language ability runs to asking if I can go to the toilet, please. They make a lot of high quality drama and documentaries and are often very adventurous with their subject matter. Whoever chooses their imports has a great eye for quality tv so they spend their budget well. And they air their best shows at decent times instead of burying most of them like RTÉ tend to do.

I would desperately love for the bulk of the license fee to be handed to TG4 and for them to be the national broadcaster. They'd have the potential to make it a world class channel.

I really believe that is true. They make such a high volume of content and it's very rarely bad. Imagine what they would do if they had the budget?

TV3 for me just because of their choice of football commentators. Time after time ruins a perfectly good CL match. I've had to change over to ITV now Tuesday nights.

Besides sports I don't watch any of the channels and would much prefer to have a choice between paying the licence fee and not getting the channels. Would be a very easy choice.

Agreed, they have basically ruined 50% of the Irish Champions League coverage, which is a shame because RTE provide better analysis than the British counterparts.
The amount of material targeted at the brain dead is also alarming(psychic readings, Xposé etc.)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,465 ✭✭✭kitakyushu

Agreed re TV3 CL coverage. It's the only time I even watch that channel and when I do it's on mute during the game. Plus I just go do something else rather than watch their analysis.

TV3, was sick in bed last week, turned on the TV, Ireland AM, Midday, The Morning Show all are badly make up, badly researched.

But they do show 3 hrs for Ireland AM, 1 hrs for TMS and 1+a bit for MD. RTE did not have anything like that in the morning and are better without them.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 548 ✭✭✭p.oconnor

Can everyone ever remember TV3 showing a Natural history/historical or Science documentary?. They show about 10 crime documentaries every year and then just rename and repeat them every few nights. Can you imagine if TV3 could not lean on ITV for the soaps, there would not be one show that would be in the top 20 in the overall ratings.

... and I agree sport on the channel is unwatchable, would only watch it as a last resort.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,296 ✭✭✭RandolphEsq

TV3; I'll ignore the tripe "Ireland's Saggy Fannies" type programmes and say it is because of their absolutely awful football coverage.

Dave McRedmond reckons TV3 does really well with its budget, it probably does when compared to RTE (who's programmes are not much better made but are on rather less tabloidy material) but that doesn't excuse its coverage of European football or the mere existence of Xposé

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,322 ✭✭✭splashthecash

This poll is bull**** - 68% pick TV3?!

I'd say if people were to honestly say how often they actually watch TG4 you would see a very low percentage....it just people don't want to bad-mouth it because it promotes the Irish language. And if you don't watch it, how can you know how good\bad it really it's programmes are?

I watch TG4 every now and then and find the progamming very dull and uninspired. Their GAA coverage & breaking bad is their only saving grace.

Their documentaries are of a very high standard. They've got a lot more going for them than TV3 - and the people who work for them know how to put a program together. The in-house stuff made by TV3 looks, sounds and is awful with very few exceptions.

Remember - just because other people don't agree with you doesn't mean they're wrong.

It's so difficult to chose the worst, they're all so bad.

TG4 is by far the best. Maybe it's just that I can't understand Irish but everything about the channel seems to work, look and feel better than the rest of RTE. I only watch savage eye and republic of tele on RTE player. My TV is long gone.

Haven't really ever sat through anything on TV3.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 cricketfan

TV3 are just an embarrassment for anyone with a level of intelligence, with the obvious exception of Vincent Browne. The rest is downmarket pap which surely their presenters, Cagney, etc, must acknowledge, but hey, it's a good money earner for them.

If you read The Sun or The Mirror then it must be right up your street. Tabloid TV.
