Hi folks, i got an old bike recently with missmatched wheels, one of my pet hates. The front wheel is a nice 1980's mavic rim on a suntour hub. Ideally if i could get a rear wheel to match it i would be delighted. If not if anyone has a pair of decent 80's wheels, i'm in the market.

    Thanks,

    Ger

    Hi guys,

    Congrats on new bike!

    I have the following wheels:
Set of 32h Wolber TXs on Mavic Hubs (screw on) clinchers €90
Set of 32 or 36 Open Pros on Campag C-Record (screw on) clinchers €120
Front 36h Mavic MA2 on Campag Chorus Hub (rear hub also avaiable) €35/50 with rear hub

All wheels true. I'm based in Cork.

    Best wishes,

    Brendan

    Hi Brendan,

Thanks for the response, i have never come across screw on hubs before?. Does this mean you need a screw on cassette, i.e. a threaded casette, no lockring?.
If so does it come with a cassette?

    thanks,

    Ger

    Hi Ger,

    You're making me feel old!

Screw on blocks were the norm until casette became popular in the mid-late 80's. The rear hub is threaded and both these wheelsets can accommodate a 7 speed block. I can probably include a block but you're always best breaking in a new chain and block together. And of course it might depend on what ratios you want.

Shimano 14-28 blocks are widely available and other ratios such as 13-26, 13-24 or racing blocks such as 13-21 should be easy enought to find.

Ha Ha i'm not that young, its just i have only recently in the last year or two, gotten into the bikes, so i'm still learning!. I like the look of the older 80's 90's stuff. I have a few regular cassettes so i would prefer a wheel that i could use them on. Would you have any other spares Brendan?. 90's wheels would be fine to they dont have to be strictly 80's.

The older cassette's or 'freewheels' as they are called are generally pretty cheap. Any bike shop will have a load of old one's lying in a box. Newer wheels, with modern cassettes tend to have wider hubs so it's very likely you'll have trouble fitting a newer wheel onto an old steel frame. But if that's what's already on your bike it should be grand.

Here's a good pic showing the two.

Very informative! thanks guys. Never even considered the width of the wheels might be an issue.

Ger, I'd say check out with your local bike shop as to what you require. If what I have suits just let me know. I do have a Shimano 600 casette hub, but it's not built up so you'll probably get a built up wheel easier and cheaper.

    Good luck with the bike,

    Brendan
