How do i take a person out of a photo & onto a new canvas?

Hi all, As above, i have a photo of my nephew in his 1st Holy communion & it seems the only good photo of him is in a group, i think i saw something a good while ago in Computeractive magazine about that as it was a free tool. As it is no good cropping the photo as i found out. Thanks for any help
