Sky magic eye & Saorview box possible?

I have quit sky and am very happy with the free English channels on satellite.

I currently have a good quality outdoor aerial on the roof that gives good quality Irish analogue tv channels that is wired onto the sky box. So my old style tvs have Irish analogue and also free satellite on old sky box. This also runs a magic eye up to the bedroom.

Question is can that cable running the magic eye feed onto a Saorview box that I plan on buying for the bedroom tv? Will I then lose my magic eye function. To the sky box that's downstairs? Is there a loop or way of leaving the wiring as it is and just adding a splitter to allow aerial signal to be f ed to the Saorview box also?

Try placing the Saorview receiver between the magic eye and the TV. The analogue feed/channel from the Sky box will loop-through the Saorview receiver to the TV via the co-ax while the Saorview receiver will decode the Saorview channels and output them through the scart/HDMI to the TV.

Hi Irish Homer, did this work?

I have similar, quit sky and have decoder in the attic with satellite and aerial supplies (inputs) into the decoder and one coax out from old sky box in the attic down to my tv. Can I simply connect one coax to the saor view box for it to work, with magic eye connected as above?

Yes it should work. One Saorview box needed per TV with this setup. You need the TV aerial connected to the "aerial in" on the Sky box.

Just to bump this thread a bit and this is sort of related, I have a Saorview/Freesat HD tv in the bedroom and also a Magic Eye for Sky all feeding through the one coax connection.

The tv has a signal quality and strength reading built in and using the magic eye both quality and strength are greatly reduced. Since the rest of the Freeview channels went live yesterday my BBC channels(SD) have dropped their signal to nearly zero for some reason.

I`ve fed the coax direct to the display without the magic eye and the signal quality for everyhting is 100% with strength varying from 99% for Saorview to 90% for Freeview.

I suppose my question is am I stuck with the weakened signals if I want to keep the magic eye plugged in or could there be a work around? The only really concern are the BBC channels(SD) which are so low that I am getting some picture break up.

Seems like a problem with the eye, or the cable & connections between it & the tv. Probably just coincidence that it worsened yesterday.

Yeah I may try and get my hands on a different one and see if that helps.

weridness suggestions - these are things you can try , not necessarily stuff that could actually work

make sure the saorview box isn't set to provide power (antenna amp/boost OFF)

get a power pass splitter so power goes to the magic eye and none to the saorview box

try the other RF output (yes the magic eye won't work - but just testing)

only if all else fails run a second cable so magic eye and saorview box are separated - borrow a different magic eye to try first

Odds on it's a dodgy cable or failing magic eye

Thanks for the suggestions. I dont actually have a Saorview box, its a TV with digital tuner. Im sort of hoping its a failing magic eye and not a cable problem as obviously its easier to resolve.

The cable connected direct to the tv without magic eye gives a near perfect signal for all channels, its only when its fed through the magic eye where the weak signal arrives so thats leading me to believe it may be a problem with the magic eye. Still getting the Sky signal on analogue.

I may bite the bullet and pick up another magic eye(€10 or €20 I think) and see if that improves things. The one I have is 7 or 8 years old so Ive certainly got my monies worth out of it.

Just a quick update. Bought a new magic eye this morning to see if this would improve things and I'm glad to say it totally sorted it.

Saorview reception is ow showing oth 100% quality and strength and the Freeview and Freeview HD channels are showing 100% quality and around 90% strength, so a huge improvement.

Also the Sky feed from downstairs is also a lot clearer on the TV upstairs now.

    Delighted with the result. :)
