Quick Compact camera question

Hi, i just wanted to ask if anyone has had really good results with a compact camera, maybe one with manual settings?

I just put my 35mm film camera up for sale, and for no other reason except that i want to take lots of pictures and be able to edit/view them right away.

I am out of the DSLR market due to price, and having previously owned a bridge camera ( Fuji S4000 ) i don't want to go back down that route, plus they are expensive too.

So i thought i would get a decent compact secondhand, just so i could take a lot of pics and come home and look at them or edit them right away. i have seen some compacts that took fantastic pictures, but at the time was using film and cannot remember model etc.

Anyone can point me to a few good compact models?

    Thanks in advance!

2nd hand I would look for a Canon G9. I now have the G12 but it's only slightly better than the old G9 and the G9 does a few things the G12 forgot too.

It is fullly manual and shoots RAW. Has a good lens too.

meant to be a great camera too. this and the three I mentioned all have 'short' zoom but are meant to be great.
@cnocbui- out of interest do you have an Olympuz xz-1; I'd be interested to hear thoughts from people who own one.

Good piece about rivals for olympus Xz-1, with links to conclusion, reivews for each etc.

A high-ISO king it is not, but with an f/1.8-2.5 lens and image stabilisation on board, it does not really have to be anyway. Video, on the other hand, is more of a mixed bag. It's good to be able to use the optical zoom while filming and apply Art Filters to the footage in-camera, but in a product of this calibre you would expect user selectable frame rates and full manual control over video exposure.

If there's ever going to be an Olympus XZ-2, I would like to see only minor improvements to the design, including a dedicated ISO button and perhaps more internal storage with the ability to save images simultaneously to the on-board memory and the memory card for instant backup.

In summary the Olympus XZ-1 is a very attractive and well thought-out - if a bit expensive - digital compact camera that appeals to a wide range of users and presents a real threat to the likes of the Canon Powershot S95, Panasonic Lumix LX5 and Samsung EX1

    Thanks for the info everyone.

the Olympus xz-1 is around 300 euro, anyone know if the Nikon D3000 is worth the extra 69 euro? Size isint a problem for carrying around, and i am not interested in video as i have a small camcorder that does me. But does the Olympus xz-1 level up to a entry level DSLR like the D3000?

    Thanks.

No. I was tossing up whether to get one and eschew interchangeable lenses but decided to go for a micro 4/3 mirrorless camera instead.

Thanks for the help and tips, nearly bought the G9 before the e400 opportunity came along.
