I hate vegetables?

    Hi all, so I'm 19 and the only veggies I eat are carrots. I've just always hates the texture and taste of all other vegetables. I hate it because it really limits what I can and can't eat, it's also embarassing. As a result, I eat a lot of bready foods because I can't just fill up on veggies. I'm not overweight but I know it's not healthy and I do want to widen my diet. Eating the same things is boring and unhealthy.

    You could try juicing fruit and veg to increase your intake that way?

    Failing that, you could try chucking a few bits in to a stir fry (you won't know what you're eating then!).

    Making soup (and blending the soup smooth) might help with the texture, and changes the taste somewhat as well - that might help to start with?

    Yeah soup is a great way to get some veggies into ya. Boil your veg, then throw it into a blender and liquefy it, back onto the hob and let it simmer for a bit. Salt-pepper-bit of butter and enjoy.

    If you want to like veggies your going to have to acquire a taste for them by forcing yourself to eat them. If you eat carrots then you should take to other root veg pretty easily, there isnt any real difference texture wise between carrots and sweet potato/parsnips/turnips etc. And that can be overcome by getting the taste for the veg first with the soup. Just dont throw everything ya can get your hands on into the pot for the soup because you'll end up with a horrid brown mess. Mix and match something ya like with something ya dont with the emphasis on the one ya like. Lots of carrots and a small bit of broccoli for example.

    Or just cooked the veg and force yourself to eat it, eventually you'll forget about the texture. Thats how I managed it as a kid when my mother forced me to eat all the things I didnt want to eat anyway.

    might try chopping them up small and disguising them like in a spaghetti sauce or something like that, I used to never eat vegetables but came around when I lived on my own and was poor and hungry, friends would invite me around for dinner and before I knew it i was actually liking veggies

    I've started juicing my vegetables, I get enough daily fibre from other sources.

    Yeah I agree with the above posts - force yourself to eat small amounts of veg every day to get used to the taste / texture. make it a habit over the course of a month - try ones like sweetcorn (sweet), broccolli etc. and the stirfry and smoothie ideas are great - at least you'll be getting in a mix and your vitamins and minerals.
    But it'll be a habit you need to create I'd say! :)

    I mix in carrots and.sweet potato with my mash potatoes. its ace - way better than mash on its own. try to purree it to get rid of amy textire problems. normally 3:2:1 spuds, carrots and sweet potato

    Celeriac mash is best mash. (Half and half potato and celeriac)

    Anyway you're 19 years old - it's time to put your big boy/girl face on and just eat those vegetables. Eventually they won't seem so bad, you might even get to like them.

    Is it the cooked texture you don't like? You could try a mixture of vegetables raw in a salad with a nice dressing, nuts, cheese and mix in rice/pasta
    or for example...

    Thanks, I don't really know how to explain the texture. Just slimy and gag worthy to me anyway. The soup sounds like a good idea, I also found a few suggestions to make smoothies and disguise the veggie taste with fruit. So might do that too. Would love to be able to fill up on salads and have salads with chicken and what not instead of having to have pasta/potatos/bread.

    In my experience a lot of people dislike veggies because their parents simply weren't very good at preparing them. If you are describing vegetable as slimy then that might be the case.

    Add flavors to them. I like to add garlic to a lot of mine. Garlic green beans and peppers are the shizz.

    True that.

    Veggies are only slimy if over cooked. You don't need to cook veg very much (or indeed at all in most cases). Try stir frying the veg for a few mins until warm but still crisp. No texture issues then.

    Not a huge fan either but I cook em in some home made curry or soy sauce and they go down a treat. Not perfect, but better than not eating them at all :pac:

    +1, I have always been put off mushrooms, the only time I like them is in Chinese stir fries, and I have given them a go on many other occasions and never like them.

    Veg can be liquidised and used as a base to make a curry sauce.

    You seem to be forgetting they are absolutly delicious. If athletes food tasted as good as musrhrooms I would eat it.

    have you tried vegetable tempura ?

    so many veggies taste so bloody good fried in batter its a crime we dont eat more of them.
    Cauliflower, peppers, courgettes, carrots all absolutely fab done in a bit of batter ( Ok not the healthiest but a good start )

    also +1 on hating stuff the way your Mom made it. My mom wasn't happy till what ever type of food it is was boiled fried or baked until everything on the plate were absolutely indistinguishable from each other.

    try cook your own using a decent simple recipe - then decide

    I hated veg for years - until I left home and started cooking for myself. I always steam my veg now. I enjoy them when they are cooked well but have to be cooked through so they are nice and soft. Also when I'm lazy i use the steam bags you throw in the microwave.

    Or you could try roasted pulses... chickpeas, lentils etc.

    Buy a can of chickpeas, or buy the ones that you have to soak overnight, toss them in a little olive oil and spices of your choice and put them in the oven to roast for about half an hour..... yummy... crunchy, not a bit slimy and loads of protein and fibre.

    If you like curries throw some in that. The sauce will change the taste. And vegetables have different textures its all in you're head as far as that goes.
