Hi all, just looking for a bit of advice in regards to a skoda superb im looking at its the 2.0tdi 140hp classic model 08 with 46k miles.Asking price E11,500
I've heard that this particular model engine is prone to oil pump issues?Has anyone else got experience or knowledege on these engines? Also is there anything else i should be looking out for?Tbh the engine problems are starting to put me off buying, pity because the seem to be a fairly solid car.
    Thanks in advance.

Same engine as in all other VAG cars tbh, first thing i would do is remove dpf remap it and off you go in a great car with exceptional economy

    Cheers Jimbob,
You dont think the oil pump issue is cause for concern?

No more of a concern than it would be in a passat/a4/a6/octavia/golf etc etc just check it out when buying, dpf would be my main concern really on any 2.0 VAG Daysul, beyond that if properly serviced it should be fine

    Thanks again.
DPF= Diesel particulate filter?I presume troublesome?

Yes, it's a pity as the simpler 1.9 daysuls were all in all a better engine if a little heavier on juice

Op I'd check the engine code carefully, they are a known issue.
I am not sure if its just the 170hp or the 140 as well.
It affects quite a few engine codes.
The oil pump is a big problem on some of the VAG engines causes huge damage even before it fails outright.
Not trying to freak you but I saw a fine A6 with a blown engine from this issue just last week.

    Thanks for the reply.
Is there anything that can be done to avoid failure or would you advise to stay clear?
Has there not been a recall of these engines? Will main dealers stand over failure?

Afraid not, this is a BSS from memory. I dont think its in anything else.
There is additive required for the dpf and I "think" it may have the chain driven oil pump

    You're not entirely correct.

Not all 2 litre VAG cars have a dpf.

And the oil pump issue isnt common to all models.

There is an injector recall. Is it the new or old model you are looking at?

I think VAG have it sorted now, but thats not to say that all of them are good.
VAG has consistently denied any problems with these engines in any of the Marques affected, lots of people weren't happy with the way it was handled.
Check the Audi forums and Briskoda for oil pump issues.
I think it was more the models that had twin balancer shafts that caused the hex oil drive to flog out, that and the fact that the earlier ones were non-concentric to the drive shaft.
You can replace the pump with up to date versions, as long as the pump has actually been working then its fine, the problem as I understand it is the hex shaft can be spinning in the pump for a long time before the low oil pressure light actually lights up.

All of those cars can be got with the PD 140 never said all 2.0 litres as there are afew variations, point stands though 1.9 is a superior engine.

Not sure if there was a recall on that problem, it's normal for the manufacturer to release serial numbers of affected vehicles but i don't think there was an official recall on the problem, maybe run a cartell/motorcheck car check, it's never any harm tbh

Friend had an superb taxi and was worried about this same problem so he retrofitted an oil pressure gauge to keep an eye on the oil pressure levels as sometimes by the time the yellow/red oil warning light comes on it's already game over

Yes, but there are cars mentioned in your post that didnt have the major oil pump issues at all.

And there was a recall on injectors. I searched for the very thread the other day on advice from another poster. It details a lot of information on those engines.

Im just replying with my limited knowledge, friends taxi is still going strong with 130,000 miles btw and DSG box is fine too.

Best thing is to try and find out the window where this issue came about as if there was no official oil pump recall then it was probably sorted in house asap and ignored thereafter as most peoples 2 years warantee's were finished.

The oil pump is something a specialist like Daltons in Abbeyleix can sort relatively easily and at low cost. Preventative mantainence is key here.

Apart from the engine, that car is just a lengthened Passat and pretty ok otherwise.

Any reputable mechanic can carry out the PM for the oil pump :)

No they weren't. They were reliable, but very noisy with as narrow a power-band as exists in any engine ever. Glad they're gone.

The common rail (CR) is the one that gives the least trouble from what others have said on here regarding Skoda engines.

I'll get someone who knows a lot more than me to give you a bit of help ;)

EDIT: Direct quote from PM: Do the oil pump, make sure it's had the injectors done and it's fine. The PDs give dpf trouble as they were a retrofit on that engine if my memory serves me correct.

As in the PM to the oil pump drivetrain presumably?

Yeah James, there's a bar in that that needs to be replaced or something along those lines.

Its about the size of a allen key. The correct length in the newer model was 100mm but the older ones are 77mm.

Ya,ill ask him to keep the old part,so i can see it.

    Edit:
Its being bought from a skoda main dealer they would hardly try pull a fast one?would they?

I'm late to the disscussion and I'm not sure about the oil pump problem but if you have a DPF (diesel particulate filter) problem just google jlm dpf cleaner and they have a distributor in Cork who I bought it from for my car, cheap as chips works a treat brought my filter back from the dead now back to nearly 100% clean!bought 2 cans into the diesel €70/€80 car never driving better.

You'd never know. If you don't get to see the part, try and get him to sign something to say it had been done in case anything happens in the future. THis might be overkill, it also might save you in the future.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭harvester of sorrow

    Lol!
Ya was going to do that first thing in the morning, just tought maybe someone might have some experience of this.Looking forward to picking up the car, will be gutted if i have to leave it itll next week:mad:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 832 ✭✭✭harvester of sorrow

Well picked up the car on saturday, and so far im delighted with it.The 140bhp has plenty of grunt:D
It also has such a soft ride, feels like im driving an a cloud!!And so far im getting returns of 5.2l/100km(55mpg)So pretty happy with the economy.
As for the original issues that i was concerned about......the oil pump shaft was replaced as requested and written into service book and also on the reciept,so im happy enough that the pump is covered for a bit at least.
I will get the shaft repalced again in another 30/40k miles just to stay on top of it.

Thanks to all here for your replies, very helpful.:)
