Greetings fellow .IE-ers, I've just purchased a 2001 Yaris Verso, having totaled our pristine 2000 Yaris 1.3. One of the first jobs is an oil change and new plugs, and having gone around a few 'motor factors' around the Dun Laoghaire/Blackrock area was unpleasantly surprised to find the cheapest 5ltr. of 5W-30 is the extortionate price of €45.00 or so, as the car takes 15 liters €135.00 is absurd. I'm aware of the usual talk of long term oil purchasing agreements and that the current slump in oil prices due to the recession will not [if ever] filter down to the consumer for at least six months, open to correction here. If, as has been seen lately, garages can offer a service for as little as €150.00 odd, how can we d.i.y. motorists afford such a blatant to me, rip off. It has been some four years since I last had to do an oil change and, if memory serves, the cost for three containers was about the same as one now. Palaver over now the big question - does anybody out there know of a way to buy legally good oil at a decent price? Not even sure if this is really a thread but thanks for reading and heres hoping for some Boards.ie magic. Peace.

A yaris won't even take a gallon, HalFords have specials on oil from time to time, 20 euro for the stuff you need.

Theres no way a Yaris would use even half that amount of oil.

A yaris will take 3.7 litres, from http://www.castrol.com/castrol/sectionbodycopy.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7073092

Halfords have an offer on mobil oil right now. They had a really good offer recently of 4 litres for 20, but that's ended I think.

Tesco have some "high performace" stuff on offer now. No idea about how good or bad it is, but it can't be that bad, once it meets the grade for your car.

try your local oil distributor, they usually sell it much cheaper than motor factors and can do in 4 or 5 ltr. I get 20 ltr drum of 5w30 full synt for approx 95euroinc vat.

15 liters of oil in a yaris? are you filling the fuel tank not the sump? divide that number by 5 maybe!

Thanks for that info. obviously completely wrong about amount of oil, to misparaphrase Hilary, i must have misremembered. Would have been messy trying to fit 15 liters where only 3 1/2 is required. Self imposed ejitship has been conferred and it's off to lidl for me. Thanks again all. Peace.

Lidl only have oil in during a promotion, they do not carry it normally. Tesco garages have the cheapest oil called comma. Got it from 1.99 liter but changes all the time.

Is anyone else a bit nervous at the fact that the OP is gonna service this car himself with the knowledge that his car will take 15l of oil....

    lol

OP every few months Halfords will do the Castrol oil at €20 for 5L. More than enough for your car. Please make sure you only put in the correct amount of oil for your car. Don't under / over fill it!

This does not bode well with his knowledge of the car needing 15L. :(

Don't put cheap sh1t oil in your car

Get a decent fully approved oil

Hello folks, thanks for all the responses to my error laden question. I have since sobered up and managed to fit 3.2 liters of 10w 40 semi-synthetic from those fine fellows at Rathgar auto factors on Rathgar Ave, at the, to me, bargain price of €23. something cent, the plugs and filter bought it up to €53.something. Not only did they set me straight [no mean feat] but priced the front wheel bearing I have to get sorted soon at a reasonable 60 odd quid. So thanks again for the wit & wisdom and of course the stupid comments which are always welcome. All the best, Dunkster.

Tesco are currently selling 4 litre cans of Carlube 5w30 semi synth for 15 quid.

IIRC, 5w30 is the recommended viscosity for a Yaris.
