10 speed chain & 8 speed triple crankset

I'm converting an Sora 8 x 3 setup to a 105 10 x 3 setup except I'm keeping the existing front crankset & front derailleur and just changing rear cassette, rear mech, chain and shifters.

Will the 10 speed chain (SRAM PC 1051) be OK for the front chain rings?
I tried just laying the chain over the big ring and it seems to fit OK - the sideways play is a little less than the existing 8 speed chain but there is still some movement.

Internal dimension of the chain is the same, external is different. I'd say the issue you're likely to come up against is the cage being too wide making shifting poorer. Also, you don't need to change the rear derailleur. I'd wait until it was worn out and due for replacement...

I'm not sure if there's a wider spacing between chainrings on the 8sp vs 10sp. If so, maybe there's a risk of the chain slipping between rings.

Replacing the front derailleur shouldn't add too much to the cost I would have thought.

Interesting. I've a nine speed Xenon rear derailleur. Do you reckon with a 10 speed cassette and shifters, it would work ok as 10 speed? Same concerns about the chain width and front cranks.

Should do. The rear derailleur uses jockey wheels on the inside of the chain for shifting so I would expect that it would handle it nicely. OTOH, it's possible that the rear cage is narrower for the 10sp and this would presumably reduce the sideways float of the jockey wheel so a 10sp derailleur may work just that bit better.
