Yep, American's will kill it. Maybe it will take off like the Office, but will go on forever. Like the Office.

Yeah was watching an interview with them and the guy playing Jaye really doesn't suit the role. I'm actually surprised they didn't change the race of at least one character.

I think whoever was given the job of casting Neil , was basing him on a Neil from a different British comedy

I watched a few episodes of this recently. Found bits to be funny, but again, far too much so called comedy is relying on vulgarity and OTT vulgarity. It's just not believeable. Lacks creativity. The humour is also very predictable and staged.

The Inbetweeners is actually one of the most realistic comedies I've seen in years in fairness, teenage boys really do act like that.

Besides, this thread is about the American reboot. WTF is up with the American Jay's face? this is going to tank.

Everyone going in all negative not giving it a chance.

Of course it has HUGE standards to live up to.

Me - I think a half decent remake of The Inbetweeners is better than most crap on TV these days.

Of course, everyone will be comparing it to the original, and just like anyone who has read a book and then watched the film, it never compares, even if it is superior.

Well I think the fact that it is on MTV is red flag number 1,that interview with the cast is number 2. The skins remake was number 3. This will be horrible. And I'm not one to jump on the bandwagon of instantly dismissing an US remake of a UK show. I actually enjoy the US Shameless, but it is on Showtime, and the US Office was good early on,but again it was on NBC.

    This will be terrible.

People always go up in arms about this but the American adaptations of British shows in the last 10 years have largely been successful and not a horrible rip off. The Office US has been very good, Shameless US is underrated and the Queer As Folk US adaptation I believe has been just as successful as the British version.

I think the IT Crowd and Teachers never got past the pilot stage. But if it's a good idea, they'll pick it up. Often the first episode is identical to the first episode but I've thought the adaptations have largely been tastefully done and well adapted speaking about the Office and Shameless. I'm sure The Inbetweeners, given the success of Superbad in portraying "loser" teenagers, will also take off.

I don't know why people go up in arms about it the whole time. It reeks of television snobbery, similar to people who proclaim they liked a band before it became popular.

they will make a árse of this i'd say, the original is one of the best programs i've ever seen

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,555 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

I think this will be more like the Red Dwarf and Spaced remakes. :) Or maybe Pucks.

The casting looks as bad as the IT crowd remake!

I have my doubts as to whether this will 'translate' into the US, and am too sure about some of the casting either.

Then again as pointed out the US Office did work, even managed to stand on its own...

The US Office was very, very lucky in that it had a comedy genius in the shape of Steve Carell as the lead man. He held the programme together on his own for a few years. I've lost all interest in it since he left the show.

This remake will be a shambles I think. Saw an interview with them all there. The lad who's playing Jay looks like a clown. His face in the picture above is awful. They could surely have found a better one than that.

I'll probably watch the pilot. Can't see myself going any further than that though.

In a parallel fact/fiction hybrid Universe I can imagine The (original) Inbetweeners looking at that picture and taking the piss out of Jay.

Imagine having that bloke playing you in a TV show

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

Haha well Jay is ugly but not in a 'i look retarded way' he's a skinny wreck who thinks he's a ladys man, which is what makes him funny but that guy just looks like an overweight clown, the type of guy Jay would rip into.

This would be good if the casting was better.

    Whats there to translate?

    well there's 'clunge' for one...

The humour involved is very British, I mean you can tell from the cast they've chosen that the people in charge of this reboot don't get it.

    Simon looks far too cool
Will looks like he's trying to be a geek when he isn't
Neil looks like a stoner instead of an idiot
Jay looks more like Big John

They better be damn good actors to pull off those roles when they look completely wrong for them

Its the American Version, they'll have their own spin on these things, but I just can't get past the awful casting.

I can't wait to see Jay on some talkshow and shown this dude hahaha

The US Jay is arguably a more realistic looking Jay the Character than the UK one.

The UK Jay is a decent enough looking guy who would certainly have pulled a few girls in the local school, discos, pubs etc, and wouldn't have to tell his completely outlandish falsehoods. The US one is a better fit for this imo.

I'll be watching it with an open mind anyway.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 29,555 ✭✭✭✭CastorTroy

Actually, now I'm looking and from left to right it's Stan, Kyle, Kenny, Cartman.

Your exactly right, I honest think Will is nearly as badly cast as Jay. I'll eat my hat if this is anything less then a Turkey.

    Yup, 100% agree with this.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,296 ✭✭✭EdenHazard

Yeah actually his charachter will be interesting to see, but it was funny because Jay was just about not ugly enough to make the stories sort of believable and we all know someone like him, a below average looking dude who thinks he can pull whoever, whenever.

The thing about Jay was always that he seemed like he should be a popular guy, but it was his own ego and personality that dragged him down. He cared more about being popular than just trying to be normal and becoming popular. That's why he never pulled. His bragging, overconfidence and ego put women off, not his looks.

The picture doesn't instil confidence but I'm going to give it a chance. To be honest I thik we're so immersed in british humour and slang and share so much in common that I think the show will never quite hit the mark for us here in the same way the original did.

That being said,it could still be funny. What i can't get away from though is that it looks like the RJ Berger show on Netflix. I have a feeling it'll turn out like that. Not bad, really, but not great either.

The thing with Jay was that while he wasn't ugly enough to not get girls, what would have put them off of him was his personality and that's why it was such a good casting. It doesn't seem like this Jay would have that. Yes, I'm being slightly pessimistic without seeing it, but I don't have high hopes.

Bet its just two minutes of American Jay going, "duurrrr..."

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,341 ✭✭✭El Horseboxo

MTV is definitely the wrong choice without even looking at the cast or any other factors. They won't be able to have the bad language. While the original didn't depend on the cursing it added huge realism to the show that allowed many to relate to how everyday conversation realistically occurs among fellas in that age bracket. A well timed and placed curseword is simple but can be very effective, a la 'bus ****'. Without even considering anything else I'd always feel the show is being constrained and held back with a watered down version. But the casting does look horrible too.

    ......

They're pretty much ripping off the entire first season, but with an American accent!

This is not going to end well. Not once did I hear the word, "wanker". In fact, all the insults that were there were pretty damned tame in comparison. Yup, I smell a turkey. But you just know it'll become widely successful in the States somehow.

Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints that looks awful. Are Americans really that humorless? Damon Beesley and Iain Morris, who made the UK version, were executive producers of the US version. Are they happy with this?!

As far as I'm concerned the USA version never happened. I wouldn't waste 10 seconds on it.

I've never seen that many dislikes!! Yeah piss poor americanised version of a classic comedy. I have a feeling American's may lap it up though, they've taken a real Superbad vibe to it, and thats all the rage at the moment

Looks like they took The Hard Times of RJ Berger and just wanted to cash in on the Inbetweeners name. Except I actually want to watch RJ

Bollix. The UK version was one of the funniest shows ever. Everything about it was perfect.

The US version will be a complete disaster, but it should be viewed as entirely separate from the UK show. It's not their fault that MTV had to go and rip it off.

Go back and watch season 1 again and you'll soon realise how ridiculous your statement is.

To be fair.. go back and watch season 3 and the movie again, and you'll see how sharply it declined.
