ive done a search and cant find a recent thread on this so here goes.

right, thinking of getting myself a psv licence and becoming a taxi driver.

just wondering if anyone here has done this recently and could tell me if its worth doing.

i have a mate who is a taxi driver and seems to be doing ok. (he's also fond of the bookies and seems to win a lot aswel and has no kids or family to look after aswel).

what id really need to know is how would you go about getting started, is it worth it and would you need to work long shifts everyday for feck all money??

If you don't need much money or free time it's great . Most taxi drivers will probably tell you to forget it , you could lurk here and find out more or ask the lads ..

To make it pay you need to do very long hours and have repeat business off regulars. After you cover your expenses you might well most likely struggle to make more than dole money some/many weeks if relying on street work.

Try to build up a relationship with some of your regulars

I used to often make the same trip 3-4 times a week
Instead of calling the company I just call up my man, he's happy for the business and I was happy to use him.

Now tell us, what car do you have?

I have yet to meet a taxi driver i(in the last couple of years)who told me he is making good money. I have yet to meet a gambler who told me he loses money.

Well its nowhere near as good as it was a few years ago thats for shure, long hours are needed.
After base fees,fuel,inshurance,ware/tear ect ect you could break even or make 300+ more

My dad used to be a taxi driver. Gave it up in 2003 due to "there's no money in it anymore"

Just think what are things like now...

Go out on a friday or saturday night to any taxi rank in Ireland, there's your answer.

All depends on what your outgoings are. Get to wear your own clothes, work when you want, listen to the radio, watch mp4s on the rank, answer only to yourself.

But if you have a big mortgage to clear or you don't have the patience to wait for the work then it might not be for you.

    I don't think turkeys get a vote.

Well first of all op, do you have a good knowledge of your surrounding area?
Just to be able to drive is not enough to be a taxi driver. You need to be very good with locations, trafic movements and timing.
Like any job: if you are good at it, you will make money. If you are good enough, you will have your own circle of clients.
Knowing how much people are still going out during weekends ( even weekdays ) and how hard it is to get a taxi back home, I can't say that taxi drivers do too bad. If you willing to work, then money is there.
Let's be honest, will taxi drivers will say now: oh Jesus, we are swimming in money! Come join us! Ofc they won't. It's an extra car on the road that will take theirs fare.

    just a quick update here,

the aul lad has a taxi and has basically said that if i get the psv licence, he'll give me the car pretty much whenever i want.

that would save me having to change the car and get the meter etc..

So just have to pull the finger out and get the licence now!

if you took the time to read the first post, you would see that i was looking for advice from people who started driving a taxi recently.
