Strange Thing in Newgrange

    Hi folks,

I am trying to find out whether something I saw in Newgrange at the weekend was real or not,

We did the guided tour and once inside the chamber the guide did the light demonstration,

What caught my attention was 1 rock in the low ceiling above what would be the top of the cross, I could see plain as day an image that looked very like the White Horse of Uffington???

When the normal lights were on the rock had what seems like salt or lime deposits probably caused by condensation, but when the guide switched on the 2 lamps that demonstrate the winter solstice the marks on the rock showed the Horse, the last thing I would have expected believe me.

Can anybody else share their views on this as I am somewhat perplexed.

    Thanks.

The deposits are efflorescence - minerals leaching out of the stones and forming crystals.
It's easy to see patterns in natural phenomena like this, much as we would in clouds, for example.
It's improbable that a motif as significant as an Uffington White Horse on the ceiling of Newgrange would have escaped sustained professional examination.

Well thats the funny thing ya see, there are what look like mineral stains on the stone in question, but nothing like what you see once the main lights are off and the 2 demom lights are on.

Just a bit of a surprise as the last thing I would expect to see is a copy of a large Geoglyph from 500 miles away in County Meath of all places. ;-)

    Hey Maudi,

I was standing just beside the entrance to the main chamber facing the top alcove and the stone in question was just above the top alcove, or the top of the cross formation that the chambers make.

    Cheers.

    Hi Maudi,

I saw it when the guide changed the lighting to show what it looks like at the solstice, otherwise you only see the white "water-staining" on the rock.

Pity they don't allow photography inside otherwise I would have tried to get some pics of it.

I think I've photos of that part of the chamber, will have a look. As was mentioned above, both of the O'Kellys examined each stone meticulously and many others have done so since so something easily visible to the naked eye is unlikely to have escaped notice.

More than likely it's so you'll have to buy their photos or postcards of the inside of the chamber. There's no other reason that I can think of.

    Right,

Surely more than just 5 of us have been to Newgrange??

Would like to hear from more people who have been to the monument and seen something unusual.

    So lets hear from you.

    Thanks.

Was there recenly and had a very odd gentleman as our guide..he spoke in a creepy monotone and then warned the tour that they werent to take photos of him or the chamber.

I have some pics of the interior that i took on a school outing 30 years ago though i'll try and scan them up if i think of it.
