Hi all , I am searching the web , UK and Ireland for the right Land Rover Discovery,

I want to get a ball park figure on the overall running costs for say a 2.5 to 2.7 diesel. I know the tax for a private is are around 1200€ per year,

Not sure what's needed if I buy a commercial disco, as I have been told I need a Vat number these days to get commercial tax ?

Also are 2.5 / 2.7 super heavy on diesel? I expect they are heavy when compared to a standard large saloon Car.

If anyone has experiences of the average mileage please let me know, or if they know about the road Tax on a commercial disco, let me know .

    Thanks all

When you buys a jeep costs will be higher full stop. Expect mid 20s mpg.

My 2005 D3 HSE (thus automatic) with the TDV6 (2.7) gives just over 30MPG.

    A previous TD5 (2.5) auto gave around 23MPG.
And previous to that again a TD5 manual gave me about 27MPG.

There's no comparing the Disco2 and 3 though - the 3 is in a completely different league in terms of refinement & comfort and the 2.7l engine is a really smooth running V6 with lots of power and torque.

Newer the better and look for service history. D3/4 are pretty reliable but like all big 4x4s regular servicing is essential and it will be more expensive to run than a big car. D2s are all getting on now and dirt cheap, one more for the keen LR fan.

Once it's out of warranty, find a good independent LR mechanic as there are get rounds on various jobs (eg fuel pump belt) that the official manual says the body has to come off for! There's good internet support if you want to get your own hands dirty.

If you have the money for a new one, LR have managed to get the 5 seat D4 classified as an N1 commercial so saving on VRT and VAT if you can claim it back. Road tax wise, unless you have proof of a business (not necessarily a VAT number) you'll pay the full passenger rate.

Im thinking of going for one of these commercials new for 2013.I am self employed and vat registered but i think i still have to pay the €1000 road tax because of the seats instead of the €300 commercial rate .Would this be correct ?

Also how boaty are the new ones,i have yet to drive one as its abit early in the year to approach a garage about changing for 2013? I currently drive a ford kuga which is very car like , would air suspension in the disco make it fairly good ?

Anything else i should be contemplating about them when i am test driving ?

    Many thanks
