Imminent hard drive failure, HELP

    Hi Guys,

I have a Hp g62, my mum dropped it last night and since I get a message on startup saying, SMART hard drive failure imminent, please run test. So I try and run the test but it crashes.

When i do get the laptop to start its very slow and a lot of programs crash. However all my files have remained unnaffected.

My idea so far is to create a recovery disk and try booting with another spare hard drive instead. Will this work?? Can I expect the same performance??

Should I go spending money on a new hard drive, and where is the best place to buy. Or should I just cut my losses and go into the market for a new laptop, with the little money I have and what would people recommend. I really like HP laptops but that might be just I am used to them.

Its honestly like I am after losing a loved one :(:(:(

Any comments or help greatly appreciated.

    thanks

Sounds like the S.M.A.R.T virus to be honest. Google it from another PC and there are some links out there on how to remove it.

You may need to boot up your laptop in safe mode if it's crashing and possibly go back to last known working configuration.

It may be the case that once you remove the virus, you won't find any major issues with your hard drive or laptop.

Hope this helps you out in some way.

Might be that the disk is foobared after being dropped and that's why it's giving smart errors .

If you think the laptop is anygood buy a new drive 60-70 € , you-tube google model how to change drive

    That's a fair point alright.

The only reason I suggest is a friend encountered a similar test at the weekend and found it to be the S.M.A.R.T virus.

Thought it might be worthwhile for the OP to check it out before shelling out money a new laptop.

Thats a hard drive error not a virus -- if it happening after the bios splash screen and before the os boots.
