Good news , just got the result's of the 2012 draw . I got my first preference choice which was for a late season buck hunt ( G1 ) in Zone C4 . Zone C4 is way up north in Tehama County , it's tough country to hunt and last years success rate was only 17 percent but it produces some really good deer.
So now all I have to do is start some kind of fitness program and loose some weight . I may also be able to get permission to hunt on a 1500 acre ranch up there that back's onto the Ishi Wilderness , should know in a couple of day's .

Congrats, sounds like it will be a serious adventure. Having to train specifically for it makes it sound intense. Long hikes carrying big packs I guess.

Jesus man your in for a tough hunt. My uncle got tags for G1 and G3 in 2007 and I went for a spin with him,its tough ol going up there. The second time we hunting on horse back and camped out over night which was easier but even that you do need a good fitness especially if you get a nice size buck far from the truck. There's was a lot of hogs and wild turkey when we were there as well. Also on the ranches up there for shooting, try looking on Craig'slist for barter or jobs..... I got a good few seasons hunting near balls ferry across to tehama county for doing a few weekend's ranch work

Thanks for the tips about the ranch work but I'm too far South to be able to run up there on weekends . I'll probably bring a pig tag with me just to cover my base's .
Yes I know it going to be a tough hunt . I've applied as a group with a buddy of mine and were going to bring his Yamaha rhino with us so hopefully it wont be too difficult . even so I'm going to start walking a couple miles every day and try to get somewhat ready for the hunt . G1 is a relatively 'small' area and hopefully with the hunt being late October early November the cold weather will push the deer down out of the mountains onto some flatter areas , just have to wait and see ...

I'm also going to start getting my gear ready early so there's no last minute panic . I'll take my Husqvarna .270 and my 30.06 to the range and zero for 200 yards . Also going to buy a good quality sleeping bag .
