Why have woods sorta gone out of fashion?

I was just thinking about my 14 clubs lately and I reckon I could play with easy 2 more woods 5 and 7. Currently my 3 wood is my go to club, I'm not a big hitter by any measure but off the deck I hit my 15.5 deg 3 wood around 195 meters carry a little more off the tee. Even compared to my 4 iron I'm much more dependable with it. I have a gap between my 3 wood and 4 hybrid. I thinking about a shake up and was looking for your thoughts.

Woods have never been more "in fashion" imo.

I'm going to take a wild stab and say it "sorta" coincided with hybrids coming into fashion.

Cos wedges and hybrids are in. With a limit on the number of clubs in the bag, something had to give

Thanks I carry 4 wedges incl pw but find I seldom hit my 4 and 5 irons partly because I wouldn't often be approaching those distances but also I find they take pretty good swings where with the 3 wood I don't tend to hit it fat ever really and was thinking about the 5 and 7 wood when I already carry a hybrid.

Definitely out of fashion. Everyone thinks it's cool to have lots of wedges and hybrids. Everyone loves telling you the loft of their wedges too, i don't care about your 60 degree wedge to be honest!

Personally I think with the huge improvement in drive distance off the tee over the last decade in particular we just don't need to use the "woods" as often so have moved more towards wedges and maybe in the last five years the hybrids have come on the scene and are easier to hit from the rough and bad lies so taking the two together reduces the number in the bag.

I have 4 wedges also, so sacrificed the 5 wood to allow for this. I find the lower hybrids cover in and around the same distance and are more versatile than a five wood for out of the rough etc.

Not really getting what your question is here? Are you thinking of replacing your hybrids with the likes of a 7 wood and wondering if this is a good idea?

Drivers are more forgiving and with a bigger choice of lofts/shafts etc, so this makes hitting a 3-wood off the tee less appealing to most amateurs, many of whom don't hit a 3 wood off the fairway/rough so it is a little less popular than before. And hybrids hit the ball farther and farther so the gap between a 17 degree hybrid and a driver isn't as significant as it used to be. 5 woods are obviously competing with hybrids of varying lofts so no surprise there is less of those in the bags.

No I was thinking of losing my 4 and 5 iron for 5 and 7 woods. Or something along those lines.
    Here's what I have now.
Driver, 3 wood. 4 hybrid. 4 to pw. 50,54,60, and putter.
I had thought the obvious thing would be get a 3 hybrid or something but I'm kinda thinking this instead.
Driver. 3,5,7 wood. 4 hybrid 6 to pw. And wedges and putter stay the same. My reasons are I find the 4 hybrid easy to hit out of rough ect and is very versatile but id be better with my 3 wood by a long way, from the fairway. Plus my handicap means I don't need to find the green from 190 semi rough so one hybrid might suit me fine. Then I would hit woods better than my longest irons, which are equally poor out of rough. Is that logic sound?

    I don't understand why you have a 4 hybrid and a 4 iron. If I were u I'd go for something like 3 wood, 19 hybrid, 23/24 hybrid, 5-GW and a 56 and 60.

I love 910F 3 wood, ive got Driver, 3 wood, 3 hybrid, 4-PW and 50* 54* and 58* wedgers. Cant see myself moving away from this setup either tbh. I use my 3wood on tightish holes that are 350-400 yds in length if theres trouble really

To be honest with you I think you'll end up finding out that a 7 wood & 4 hybrid will pretty much travel the same distance, and id imagine a 5 wood & 3 hybrid wouldn't be a million miles from each other either

Arent Hybrids just woods with shorter shafts??

And different shaped heads, woods are larger and dont really get through any rough like hybrids

Not really, their heads are very similar. Hybrids are woods with a bit taken off the back and long iron shafts... Nothing magical abt them at all

Oh whatever, 99% of hybrids are a lot smaller head shape than woods and they do get through rough patches better than woods, no one said they were magical, but thats the difference between them and most woods

It's a logical move if these are the clubs you hit best and the distance you hit them is well staggered. My current setup is the same as your current setup except I have a 3 hybrid instead of a 4.

Would there not be a large gap left between your 4 hybrid and 6 iron? Although that said, hybrids are quite easy to take a bit off by gripping down a bit.

I hit my 6 iron about 155/160 mtrs. And 3 wood 195 ish off the deck. I was hoping the 5 and 7 woods would slot in there nicely. I kinda see the hybrid in a general utility role in that set up. Playable when I'm in tricker lies ect.
I play links and use a low launching shaft in my woods aldila nv 75 stiff which is costing my a little in distance but I like the low boring flight. Great in wind. Which is why I'm slow to bite the bullet on the extra 2 woods it's more expensive to order in that buy off the shelf in the shops.

Why not just drop the 4 iron for now and replace it with a 5/7 wood depending on the loft of your hybrid? My bag looks like this. Driver 10.5, 3 wood 15.5, 5 wood 21, hybrid 24, 5-pw wedges 52 56 60 as I'm no pro these clubs pretty much have me covered from any distance.. Now only if I could just keep them straight :(

Go for it so! Hope it works out

The haven't gone out of fashion with John Daly, according to Sky coverage, he had 5 different woods in his bag at the BMW Open yesterday

On mature recollection, the mention of John Daly on a thread with Fashion mentioned is completely off topic

I beleive that to be a bad reference as golf in its self has never been acclaimed for being "Fashionable" the main point behind there style is Comfort and advertising..
