sram shimano compatibility

so, what exactly is compatible... might upgrade to sram shifters, but what can I keep from shimano? Does a Sram shifter NEED sram rear mech? Does a Sram shifter NEED sram front mech? Is spacing on a 10spd shimano chainset ok for SRAM shifters? Are chains and cassettes interchangeable? Thanks now

Chains and casettes are mix and match. Shifters and derailers are a bit more complicated. I've seen some 10sp groups mixed but not 9sp.
