Ok so I'm new to this and want to make a start, I just want an idea on the best shop to go to and if possible what would be the best bike to start off with. Ill be using the cycle to work scheme and I plan on spending the 1,000, I dont want to go to any shop in case they try and take advantage of the fact that I've no idea on the difference between the bike and try and sell something just so they can clear stock or something like that. I'm more than likely just being paranoid about this but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

IMHO, They're mostly sh1t... but if you have to buy in a bricks'n'mortar institution and you want to stay local, there's that Spokes place in Riverstick and Victoria Cycles. I don't like and won't recommend Kilgrews; They're not at all customer oriented.

I use Kilgrews from time to time. They are a bit grumpy but hey, that's the old school bike shop charm. You'll be giving out when it's gone!

They have some pretty decent stock in there for a small shop and they'll do a deal.

Kilgrews are all right IMO, your man in speedy spokes is a gem. The edge in kinsale rd have a lot of bikes, you can form your own opinions! your man in dillons cross had a few. Victorias cross cycles are ok too, nice to deal with as is west end in ballincollig. Dont know what wills wheels in douglas have. Go around to them all and pick their brains, the more u talk to the more you'll learn.

Talk to Micheál at Cork Bicycle Services. Very nice guy. Very honest. He won't try to sell you something that won't suit you. He's based on Hop Island, Rochestown. He has a nice showroom beside his workshop with all the frames that he sells on display. You pick the frame and he builds it up for you with whatever components you want. It's a nice bespoke service.
