Lee Westwood will leave his native Nottinghamshire for the United States at the end of this year.

The 39-year-old's 57th attempt to win a major ended in a tie for 10th place at the US Open on Sunday.

And Westwood is convinced the best way to prolong his time at the top of the sport is to relocate across the Atlantic.

He said: "There are a number of reasons but the main one is I haven't got that much time left at the top and I want to give myself the best chance of staying there as long as I can.

"I am moving to America at the end of this year because, with our weather, it is hard to practise when you want to practise in the UK.

"The rest of the family are really excited about the move and I can see us spending the next five to 10 years in America."

He is not saying it but playing in European tour events is not doing him any good and he knows it now.

He sent me a PM saying it's because I was ridiculing him for winning only small events. Fair play to him.

Surprised it didn't happen sooner tbh, though I stand to be corrected, vaguely remember him making a move over to the US in late 90s?

Dead right, three US based majors versus The Open, that's his motivation, hope he does it!
