Keep/convert or flog.....

    Hmmm,

So I bought a(nother) bike on a bit of a whim. I was looking for a project. I had intended to build a commuter for myself/son, so my initial thoughts are to strip ‘n sell / keep some bits etc but am open to suggestions as to what to do next.

    Spec:
Sunn Motive Exo (2007, I think)
    Frame: Aluminium with Carbon fork
Shifters, FD, RD: 9-speed Shimano Tiagra Triple
    Brakes:
Crankset :Truvativ Touro Triple 52x42x30; BB sealed, square taper fit.
Wheels: Shimano WH-RS10 with 11-25 nine speed cassette & Schwalbe Lugano tyres

Mostly in excellent condition though some stripping/cleaning will be required. No obvious trouble areas at a first glance, but I guess some may crop up.

Keep: Frame, seat, stem, wheels (maybe), rear mech – convert to 9-speed flat bar with single trigger shifter/brake combo. (Might flog the wheels and fork and go for a disc brake set-up, but I suspect this will escalate costs too far)

Need to buy: Trigger shifter/brake lever (maybe something like this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=38722) , flat bar, grips, pedals, single chain-ring crankset for cartridge/square taper BB. Not much else (?), mudguards probably. Budget for this is about €150 or so, financed in part by a sale of FD, bars, brifters, crankset/BB.

Whats the advice regarding some parts I should go for? I’d like to source used parts (and recondition them if required) to keep costs in check.

Alternatively, I suppose I could just recondition/clean up this and sell it on as a road bike and start again.

    Will post a pic shortly.

I'll consider any other suggestions...... ?

Personally I'd flog it and pick up a flat bar hybrid, you could probably make a profit on it too if you pick one up second hand.

That said, if you like the frame and geometry of the sunn, it won't cost you much to convert it with the sale of the shifters etc.

Why do you want to get a single chainring crank set up? It'd be cheaper and more convenient to just keep the current triple.

Shoot ............ wrong forum. can a Mod please move to main page?

@stetyrrell, thanks. I want a single chainring simply to get rid of all of the fiddly nonsense that 24 gears brings on a commuter. 1 x 9 will be fine, and I'll look for something in the 46t-50t range to compromise so its not to highly geared.
