start up or charge however its the laptops problem and not the actually plug because the plugs both work on my sisters notebook. I have to charge my battery on her one to use this one now. Does anyone know why this is happening?

If the adapter will charge the battery when it is inserted into a different netbook then it would appear there is a break in the circuit between the socket on the netbook and the battery.

    What make is it ?
    How old is it ?

it could be the Cooling system is after going in the Laptop.. If this has happened you will need a new cooling System, Refloat the CPU & GPU on the Motherboard,

    ^^ Agree.

Keep it simple and trouble shoot before making such a diagnosis.
