hi all, as the title suggests i have a 95 2.8 pajero that is throwing out thick black smoke. i bought it about 9 months ago and it was a bit smokey then but it has got worse ,alot worse, and not just when cold its thick black smoke all the time while driving, with no loss of power at all. iv checked turbo changed all filters, blanked egr valve, flushed out intercooler, and just last week changed injectors and still no difference, from doing some research on the web all fingers seem to be pointing at the fuelpump,am i right in thinking the fuelpump needs work, i dont want to be spending more money only for problem to persist, thanks in advance for any replys

sounds like its running rich, pull out the air filter or turn the diesel pump down, theres a screw on them next to the bolt for the engine idle, i think you screw it in to turn it down.

Not 100%. but I think its out for down, in for up. As in turn it anti clockwise. Been a year or two since I adjusted one but I think I turned it in 3/4 of a turn in to give more fuel, so to get less, turn it out a full turn.

would adjusting the pump make that much of a difference because the smoke coming out of it is chronic bad

It may. If the pump is overfuelling because adjustment has slipped, then turning it down will fix it, but the pump may be overfuelling because of internal wear and this will not fix that, it will need a rebuild. Try adjusting, if no joy get the pump rebuilt.

Iv heard getting the pump rebuilt can cost anything between 300 and 1200 depending on what parts need replacing so hopefully adjusting it will solve the problem

Are you sure those prices weren't for the later 3.2 engined ones?

Pump seals are a common failure on the Mk2. Kits can be gotten off eBay for about 30 quid. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/FUEL-PUMP-SEAL-KIT-MITSUBISHI-PAJERO-SHOGUN-2-8-/370248217255?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item56348372a7

Have a look over on pocuk.co.uk - there's bound to be some write-ups on it as a lot of people have had them done. ;)

Definitely can't see it costing anywhere near €1200 to fix the problem

I agree with this^. But if you don't know what you're at you could end up with a bucket of pump pieces so maybe recon by a pro is best. A lot of pumps have been "reconditioned" at home by lads, and a few have even got as far as being re-fitted. I think 1 worked properly:D I was getting bits for a Hiace I own today and the lad in front was clutching an injector pump he had removed, looking for a seal kit. The parts man asked if the lad had removed it himself, the lad said yes.Parts man laughed and replied that he did not have one in stock but that there was a bin near door he could use to chuck it in:) Guess he knew that lad better than that lad knew himself.

EGR valves stick on these and cause excessive smoke.

They were one of the few modernish vehicles that would give you common fails in the DoE test

ya it seems to be a common problem on the pajeros so one of the first things i done was to blank the egr valve but it made no difference, would of saved me a lot of hassle if that sorted it:(

very common fault on these is the front seal going ,letting air in overnight it will start run for a few minutes then cut out ,then have to be primed and off you go ,they get very smokey as it starts to run out of fuel as it needs fuel to mantain compression and open the injectors, so when pump is out make sure those seals are done , they cost about 50 c but cost 400 euro to put in !!
