Found this little test thought some of you might like it, it's a test of how well you concentrate on driving whilst on the phone. I was only 2 out but failed the part after it reveals your results.

I got the number spot on, but missed 8 questions. Probably because I've learned to block out a woman's voice.

I gave it a try and failed badly, I was out by 15 and didn't answer 8 questions. Just seems like a computer game to me though, don't see how it applies to real life.

I don't really see how counting t-shirts is related to phone use?

one false move on a road where youre doing 60 and you are ****ed ie road kill and esp with a phone on your hand ive seen people TEXTING while driving,i remember memorising the reg and reporting it to the 1800 drive number where you can report peoples driving to a centre where they then get in contact with the traffic gards to stop them, did that and by the time i got into the city i noticed he had been pulled over..

And you did this while driving?

Missed 8 questions but got the t-shirts right to within 1. It would have been hard to count them even without the distraction. Didn't see the animal

Got the exact same. What were the 8 questions!? I thought I got them most of them, don't think I got 8 wrong...
    Edit:
Just took it again, and it seems I was either hitting space bar to soft, or early after the question. But I reckon I got 6 of the questions on the first test.

I got 26 t shirts, correct number was 27 right the first time, but failed to answer 8 questions.I did it a second time and didnt bother counting the shirts, and still failed to answer 8 questions:eek:.I think its a scam test:D.

I didnt bother stopping for the feckin pedestrians the second time and knocked them all down including the rabbit.I suppose the cops will be at my door soon:(.

Seriously though, talking on a phone is dangerous even with a hands free, because you are not concentrating on the road ahead.I see people in a car park for instance with the phone to their ear, and then proceed to exit the park still with the phone stuck to their head. Why cant they just make the call before they move off? I instinctively pull in where I can, to take a call even with a hands free.I know that sounds a bit pompous but its a fact, no excuses for been on the phone and moving.

Counted 28 t-shirts and was out by 8 questions like a lot of people.

    Spotted the rabbit/bear tho

As someone else said, counting t-shirts isn't exactly "real life"

    spotted the bear..

agree that it doesn't quite replicate real life.. unless it is a flash mob trying to get themselves hit by a car :D

    Exactly the same.

Everyone seems to be missing 8 questions.

In all fairness that test is set up to prove their point. The bit with the 'rabbit' is stupid. They have you set up to ignore people in gray tshirts so your not paying attention to the rabbit as he is gray!

There is only 8 questions. I never clicked any the first time and missed 8!

Yea, a common enough thing lately on the M3, pull onto the hard shoulder to use the phone. Just as brainless as many things Irish drivers seem to do.

missed three questions and counted 38 tshirts  or else I lost count and added ten or so, not sure, that woman barking away I would have switched her off

No, because they could help counting the tee-shirts for you. :p

I play a little game with my grandson, when I'm behind a vehicle that wanders, slows and picks up speed and the driver generally not concentrating on their driving, when I overtake he checks what the driver is up to. Most of the time the're on the phone or txting.
I find even with handsfree you still lose concentration when driving.

In fairness I turned off the volume and still counted the shirts wrong! Its very confusing watching them cross...

I quite liked the test, defo didn't spot the rabbit and missed 8 questions. Was interested in hearing more about that lasagne for dinner, sounded tasty..

I've a hands free kit in the car and hold my hands up that I'd often hold onto calls I've to make til I'm driving on a decent journey because its handier. I feel I'm paying as much attention to the road but clearly not.

Anyone ever finish a journey for example while on a call and get there thinking "wow, the autopilot is a great thing because I can't remember much of that.."

Might have to change m driving habits..

I missed eight questions (same as most.) I'd say there's probably some parts where she had an inflection in her voice that's supposed to be interpreted as a question - even though it wasn't!

I got the number of pedestrians exactly right, and I saw the rabbit even before he started waving ... go me! :)

I'll probably get into trouble for saying this re sexist remarks but I am relating a factS. I sit in a jeep as a passenger on a regular basis up and down the M50 . Boredom and old age has me just looking at other drivers re are they using mobile phones.

The stats are shocking. Every trip there are at least 3 on average using their phones. 70% of the drivers using their phones are women under 40yrs I'd say. Shocking those using their mobile phones texting are 100% young women. Never saw van drivers using their phones to their heads etc but men in suits are a regular head to head set abuses too.

I'm not trying to bring up the men and girls thing but on a whole the biggest road offenders on the m50 are not speeders, not lane hoppers etc but mobile phone abuse and this in turn with a lapse of concentration can lead to big big accidents.

I reckon if the traffic corp zipped up/down this route on the look out for mobile phone abusers here they'd have a field day. They need not worry about a non marked car as from my sightings, these folk are so engrossed in their phones, they have little or no idea of their surrounding traffic.

    Don't shoot the messenger.

If I am listening to someone talking on the radio I find I have automatically switched off to negotiate roundabouts or anything that needs concentration. I also find if I am with someone in the car I will say, hang on a minute, while a do a maneuver You can't really 'switch off' if you are listening to someone on a phone as you need to reply, so some aspect of your concentration has to give.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,390 ✭✭✭The Big Red Button

Talking to someone on the phone on a handsfree kit is no different to having a conversation with passengers in the car.

I have no problem with having a conversation on the phone or with passengers - but if I notice a hazard or something on the road ahead, that I need to concentrate on, I'll just ignore the passengers or the person on the phone until the road is clear again.

If someone other than friends/family ring me - i.e. a situation where I'd have to really concentrate on the phone conversation, for work etc - then I wouldn't answer the call, I'd pull in and ring them back.

I know how important it is to concentrate on your driving - but in the real world, there will often be distractions (such as passengers in the car etc) and I don't think it's a bad thing to be able to divide your attention while still giving priority to concentrating on your driving. I can understand how nervous inexperienced drivers would need to avoid all distractions - e.g. no radio, no chatting - but as you get more experience on the roads, you should be able to handle these distractions without letting them affect your driving.

I'm surprised it's that few. I would have thought it was a lot more than that.

Didn't do the test but I fcukin' despise the donkeys that turn on the phone loudspeaker and hold the phone away from their head to talk whilst driving. Do these people really think it makes any difference whether the phone is in your hand are held up to your head? In fact you're drawing more attention to yourself doing it that way. 'Tards!

At the top of the page it says...
Click within the game to activate keyboard controls
Everyone must be on their phones while driving their computers since they missed that :p

I lost count of the pedestrians, but I did see the rabbit and get the questions. I don't ever remember needing mental arithmetic while driving.
