Are mobile broadband dongles limited by USB speeds?

If you have a laptop with USB 2.0 ports (480Mbps max) and a broadband dongle with 7.2Mbps it's only going to be as slow as the USB speed, right?
Those ones are only any use on USB 3.0?

Nah. In theory even full speed USB 1.1 (12 Mbps) would be good enough for a HSDPA dongle. Even then, you're unlikely to get the full 7.2 out of it as that speed is shared among all the users on that cell.

No, you're not doing the sums properly. Dividing 480 by 7.2 yields 66.66666, you're potentially only going to use 1.5% of the available USB speed!

The most i got on a usb unit, was 900k per second, speed depends on distance from mast, strength of signal, are you near a window etc And other users in the area.SO the usb speed is irrelevant in this case.
The fastest speed i ever got was 22meg/per sec wifi on upc router .
its like saying if i was on the road at 3am, no other cars could i drive at 300mph in a ford focus?
I think for most people ,3 megs per second i would be fine, ie most people are on facebook ,youtube, or reading text webpages most of the time.
i,d put modem near window, with a 3ft usb cable into the laptop,to get a good signal.

I have an edimax 3g router upstairs with the dongle selotaped to the window . Can achieve 6 mega beans this way but only that the contention ratio is so low as the broadband has only come the area . . .
