Stations that charge you to text them

Has anybody else noticed in the past year nearly all radio stations in Ireland have a shortcode textline now 53***, that charges you to send a text message which is really annoying.

Granted the majority charge 20 cent, which is nothing really but if you sent a message a day for a year that would be 73 euro, wheras if they stayed Meteor or whatever network they were on it would be free if you had free texts.

    Really annoying.

    Stations doing this

    Limerick's Live 95 fm 53095 - 20c
Newstalk 53106 - 30c (109.5 - if you sent one text per day in a year)
    98fm 53981 - 20c
    Clare Fm 53030 - 30c+standard network
    FM104 53104 - 20c
    96fm 53095 -20c
    Q102 57102 - 20c
    C103 53103- 20c
    LMFM 53958 - 20c
Today Fm 53102 - Standard rate

Anyone else think it's really annoying that they charge you now to text them.
Also I wonder how much from the 20c or 30 c they actually get per message? anyone know?

They would get about 9c from a 30c (integral) charge.

There's VAT to come off that initially, as well as the network charge and the premium operators fee.

I don't know about Ireland but it is possible to make money off incoming volume to a 'standard rate' text number in the UK - its priced as if you've bought the texts in bulk so you get (some of) the price difference between this and the price the customer pays.

Also, most of the ones with standard rate codes or bog standard 08x numbers are sponsored by a mobile network.

Your on a bit of a rant this weekend. Radio stations have to pay phone companies to manage the text they receive. Most of them would have a server/blade dedicated on the network for the text they receive. They also use it to promote the station. You may send a text to a show and most likely you get one in return from most of the commercial stations.to be honest a lot of people have moved to Facebook a twitter to contact radio stations unless it's for a competition.
30 cent is a lot of money to people these days.

If you require a server for texting, your software is brutal.

Dedicated box is almost essential, but the texting *and* screen overlay for a TV station only requires a 10+ year old wreck running Win2K or XP. No server required.

At the PRS provider end, you definitely don't have a dedicated box. One server would be able to handle the traffic for multiple shortcodes of various types.
