Okay so I started college in September 2010 on a Level 7 course. I done 1 year on this course and received a Grant from VEC. I failed one exam and was not aloud back into college until I passed, I repeated the exam in May but failed again :(

I really want to go back to college and get a good education but I won't be able to because lack of money. I won't be able to get another student grant for another 5 years.. I don't want to get a loan from a bank or credit union because I will be paying it back for years. What can I do?

The Springboard initiative in higher education offers free, part-time courses at certificate, degree and masters level, leading to qualifications that are in demand among employers. The majority of courses are one-year or less in duration, and Springboard is open to jobseekers who have a previous history of employment and believe that a focused, high-quality qualification is the key to getting back to work.

I'm 18 and have no history of employment..

If you're on the dole you should get it. There's a few qualifier courses for people with no previous experience.

Yeah it is good and all but most of the courses that I would be eligible for are minor awards. I want to go and get a degree but no way of funding it because springboard only pay for the year long course and wouldn't pay for further study in a IT or university

You do not say what area you are interested in? My suggestion is look to a FETAC level 5 that leads to a level 6 with links to a Uni/college. The fees for a level 5 are minimal, you can claim grant for the 2nd year level 6 as you will not have done a 2nd year before. Then depending on your performance you can move to a higher level and keep funding pm me if you need more information.

Haha my name isn't emma  lol
I already received a grant for one year on a Level 7 course. You can only get a grant for one course and cannot it for 5 years if you drop out of the course you were getting it for.

Why don't you ask the college to resit the exam again in the summer and continue on with the course you started. Other than that we are going to have to take a PLC or other lower course and work your way up or take the hit for the first years fees. These are your options. There is no guarantee that the second chance rule will still be in operation or that Uni free fees will be available in a couple of years, the way the current government is talking they will get rid of them.
