Learner permit questions

    I have a few questions:

    1. You have your first learner permit but have not sat or applied for a test. How long does the permit last before expiring?

    2. You have your first learner permit and you sit a test and fail it. Do you have to apply for your next permit and submit your 'Fail Examiner Marking Sheet'

    3. You have your first learner permit, fail your test, dont submit marking sheet. Can you sit further tests still on your first learner permit or must you go through the process as at #2?

    Thanks in advance

I'm pretty sure your first learner permit will is for 2 years.

You can sit, and fail as many tests as you like. However, you must have held your first permit for 6 months before you can sit the test. You can apply whenever you like.

No need to submit fail sheets, this only comes into play when you need to apply for a third or later learner permit.

Thanks for your prompt reply Alan.

With regards to the first one, theres something rattling round in my cranium that the first permit lasts for 5 years.

Before you begin to learn to drive on public roads in Ireland, you must hold a learner permit covering the category of vehicle you wish to drive. A learner permit to drive a car or work vehicle is usually valid for 2 years
