Hi, I was just wondering with the new nct rule for cars over ten years old they have to be tested every year. My car will be 10 years old on January 1st and original nct will run out on January 1st. I can test my car 3 months prior to nct expiring, so say if i pass the nct in october this year will i get two years nct as my car would only be 9 years old at the time or will i still get the one year? Thanks for any help.

Good question. Interesting to see how it pans out. I reckon you'll get a two year cert, as the car will be 9 year old on the day

    You'll get a cert for 12 months...

Annual testing is now a legal requirement for vehicles that present for their 10th anniversary test and each subsequent test. You can test your vehicle up to 90 days in advance of the anniversary of your registration date. Please note that testing your vehicle within the 90 day period will not alter the date on which your vehicle falls due for the NCT each year nor will it extend the NCT certificate expiry date.

    See paragraph 3 here...

Being able to do the test early is a convenience, especially if you want to sell the car a few months before the current NCT expires but it doesn't do anything for the expiry date or the duration of the cert. you'll get if you pass.

Hmmmm..But,,if it's on the day,,wouldn't that be the "Birthday" of the car,,making it one year older on that day?

Getting the test done early doesn't change the date of when the car is due to be tested. They will still only issue the cert from that date.

I think it will be classed as a 10 year old car,and only get the cert for 1 year.

My understanding is that if the car is 10 years old when the test is due then you will get a cert for 12 months. Whether or not you actually do the test 3 months early makes no difference in this case as the car is still 10 years old on the due date.
