Hi all, I thought would be the most suitable location for this. Basically I got clamped by a cowboy firm. I am going to try and remove it today, I seen these Bolt cutters in aldi.

    http://www.aldi.ie/ie/html/offers/special_buys3_22133.htm

Just wondering do people here feel they would be up to the job? I am in Dublin 15 if anyone here has a hobby of removing these.

    Thanks

My brother removed one before with a petrol powered angle grinder, when he finished he was applauded by a large group of onlookers that had gathered around.

You can rent industrial strength bolt cutters from places, would be your best. Would cost you several hundred to buy one that's likely to cut the lock. I know there's one place in Rialto for example (Rialto tool hire) that will hire out heavy duty cutters for a reasonable fee. Safer than the angle grinder option.

Also worth looking at what type of lock it is. If it's a standard padlock, you could probably pick it easily enough. (The tubular style locks are a lot tougher unfortunately).

    hope it works out ok!

That you for all your responses. Having read up and looked at YouTube. I think the aldi bolt cutters will do the job. I will keep people updated.

Do anyone have a lend of bolt cutters in Dublin?

buy a cheap cordless grinder. Sparks will ignite fuel and mark glass and paint so deflect with a bit of cardboard.

    FIGHT THE POWER!

I don't really think the grinder is the way to go. I am on the way back with an 18in bolt cutters think this may be slightly to small. Again if any one has a lend of a larger one please pm me.

I wouldn't use the angle grinder. Not worth risking blinding yourself to save a few quid even if it does mean having to hand that money over to scumbags. Just rent bolt croppers from a tool hire shop.

I saw a guy one day deflating the tyre and removed the clamp with a bit of puffing and groaning , he then removed the wheel and put the spare on , tossed the clamp into the canal then happily drove off.

Clamp off. If anyone has the same problem pm me, and I will supply the tools.

Come on people just pick the lock, simple. if it's a county council clamp don't touch it you will be done either way but if it's a private company go ahead and pick it, i've been through this before but people keep going for consaws and all sorts of ridiculous stuff so just pick it.

Ideally I would have gone this way, that however requires skill. When brute force was easier.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 5,377 ✭✭✭zenno

Whatever works for you but it's not skill that is needed in picking, you can even craft those two main picks from metal lying around and improvise and make the shape as it just saves the hastle and no damage left to either clamp or car/van etc... keep that lock if you can and use it as a tool for picking and you will manage it in no time. handy to be able to do it quick and then you can get on your way faster. Glad to hear you got it off ok.

to break a lock like clampers use, you may need bolt croppers over 4 foot long.

It didn't actually look like it took that much effort. Along the lines of that video. They were €50.

My da took one off before and sold it on ebay,
ended up making 30 quid being clamped ;)

a serious 2 fingered salute to the clampers

No it was in London a few years back. Someone else must have done the same thing in Grand Canal Dock.

BTW Whatever you do, never replace the D in Dock with the C from Canal.

    It's just too scary.

Ah I'm having the same issue. I am parked outside my house and the parking permits have expired. The management company haven't issued the new permits yet and I got clamped. I called the clampers and they said they got the go ahead to start clamping. So I'm trapped in a loophole. Are bolt cutters the way to go? Where can I get ones good enough. The lock is an abus 41/50

Did you forget to apply for permit or is this management companies fault? If so I'd be onto them. Never used bolt cutters before but I'd say I'd give it a go. Best of luck with it

Well I am renting and I was onto the landlord, apparently he hasn't received the permits yet and he had already been in touch with the management company who assure him that there would not be any clamping done. When he called again to tell them about my car being clamped they just said that they would have to get back to him in relation to that, and he has heard nothing yet. Its awkward because obviously I cant get on to the management company directly, and I'm not really involved in whatever arrangement they have/had with my landlord. Im still waiting to hear back but judging by what I have read chances are I'll be the one being left to pay the fine regardless and I am not going to be doing that

Take a look on adverts, and buy a bolt cutters for 20-30 euro. Two minutes and the lock is removed.
I would not advocate this if it was the council clampers or if you were genuinely in the wrong:)
If you are anywhere near D15 I could lend you one.

Given that you've contacted them and acknowledged that you know your car is clamped you are in a delicate position.
Sounds like your issue is with the management company and not the clampers.
I would contact your management company and have them pay your fine.

Management company quite probably will tell him to talk to landlord. Also quite possible is that landlord has not paid his service charges, hence no permits?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5 manniemazing

Well there was an unexpected development. My landlord came through, got the management company to admit they were in the wrong so they're paying for it. I was kinda looking forward to being a rebel, but alas it was not to be today.

In any case clamping companies are w*nkers!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions and help! Much appreciated
