Sports journalism reaches new low in Poland?

The medias coverage of the Irish in Poland has in general been nothing short of a disgrace. There was a time when the Irish press were not in the same gutter class crap trap as the English redtops. In this tournament they have surpassed the Brits in this regard. I have been left speechless at some of them and RTE are not the worst. Some Brennan guy from the Sunday world was on the radio this morning and I thought it was a schoolyard bully with some of the taunts and belittling comments he made- I dread to hear the like of him tomorrow. The off the ball folks who are usually dead on have turned into a bunch of monotonous critics who seem homesick. And then we have RTE- nuff said!

The bottom line is a bit of decency and respect. This is lacking and it is an indictment to Irish media in general that this sh1te analysis is accepted as journalism.

But what was your point? That the Irish media are not "getting behind our boys"? Why should they check their critical faculties in?

My point is the manner of sports coverage. The standard of analysis used to be better and it seems to be a race to make the most outlandish criticism as opposed to proper thought out analysis.

For example after 2 matches of our first major tournalment for 10 years, first Euros for 24 years many commentators are calling for manager to be removed. In Euro 92 the English media were the gutter press with pictures of their manager as a turnip. Have our media now reached similar levels in their judgement?

    Press that Criticise =Gutter Press?

And the turnip head was, in part, because of his own attitude to the Press.

I though it was very entertaining. I loved when Eng played and lost to Sweden and the headline was "Swedes 2 Turnips 1".

When they got turfed out of the competition the headline was "That's your Allotment"

Really, you couldn't ask for better, ohhhhhh #wipes tear, anyway....

"outlandish criticism" on a team that has one of the worst scoring in the history of the competition? Not enough "outlandish criticism" I think.

Its the green tinted glasses again blurring your vision.

Saying someone has got a turnip instead of a head is not good journalism IMO. You disagree which is your right.

For quite a while the Irish media laughed at the low standards of English tabloids. Now they have morphed into same. They need a dose of reality.

I know the sort of low level journalism (which I refer to) does have an audience and I dont expect that same audience to recognise it. It is interesting that there is an audience that thinks replacing a mans head with a turnip is appropriate criticism. I would prefer to see analysis in a realistic context.

Tis exactly those sort of headlines that catch the eye and sell papers.....I remember that headline too and found it hilarious-just because of the idea and quick thinking of it.As amusing as this headline was;The Sun were not at all amused by the decisions that Taylor made-I'd imagine a similar headline with Hodgson's face on a turnip would've been used had they lost again to Sweden this time round.

The Irish Sun did something similar when our team embarrassingly scraped a win vs San Marino-a match we should've lost-using the headline
    "Minnows 1, Muppets 2"
with pics of Staunton and players faces morphed into muppets.
    And in fairness,who could argue.

They should analyse fairly- not ridicule.

they did analyse fairly, that's the thing, the players deserved to be ridiculed, remember we're talking about players on 10's of thousands every week.
If they can't take criticism then they shoudn't be playing football.

The only positive thing worth reporting was our fans(but of course some newspapers opted to use Roy Keane's attention-seeking rantings as their main headline); they were a credit to the country and the team despite their miserable failure on the pitch. We never really expected to progress from that group, but what we did expect were far better performances.Tis more disappointing coz we know that they are capable of better-if we look back to THAT game vs France.Instead, they looked like a team who didn't know what to do with the ball when it was in their posession. They were diabolical.

....and, wrt your OP, if you want thoughtful analysis, I'd stay away from the Sunday World

Ridicule is for people who don't try.
When people try wholeheartedly but fail because they are not good enough moral standard should save them from ridicule. Criticism is fine as they were not good enough, no problem with that.
