Hi. i'm looking for advice. Can anyone reccommend a therapist either in ireland or possibly abroad? I have had psychiatry forced upon me for the past year. it has deeply affected my life to the point where i can barely do anything..work.. have relationships etc. i feel really cut off. i have a child and am only permitted to see him if i agree to attend psychiatric services.. i have no choice but to attend the mental health services which are in fact ruining my life and have been doing so for nearly a year. i am constantaly harrassed by a mental health nurse. She constantly texts and calls me to the point where i feel bullied into going to see her by social workers or else i won't get to see my child. i am incredibly stressed by the whole situation. my friends are ata loss as what i should do. Of course I want to do everything possible to have my child.. but i feel constanly put down and ashamed after talking to mental health people and am unable to get in contact with many friends as i feel my relationships are being affected too. I feel trapped in the system and I can find no way out. I am thinking that going abroad for help away from the irish system. i am very worried about the effects this is having on my mental health..

You're experience of the system is unfortunate. Believe it or not, there is a vast amount of expertise and compassion within the psychiatric services here in Irealnd. Unfortunately, sometimes it doesn't seem that way to service users.

I'd suggest you list your grievances and forward them to the Mental Health Commission. Alternatively, the Inspector of Mental Hospitals - if you are within the hospital system.

Your stated difficulties remind me of a recent poster who started a thread entitled 'mental health'. Now closed. They too specified the state of affairs in 2012. Quoted:

"I'm trying to find out why in the year 2012 we haven't recognized that there are people far superior and very talented who can work with people who are going through difficult times without them having to go through the trauma and humiliation of hospitals. What kind of society throws its people into a hospital and forces them to stay there just because they are different... I have studied this subject in depth for a long time"

Have a look back over that thread. Maybe you could PM that poster - you seem to have certain experiences/views of the system that are common.

    Best of luck

    We CANNOT recommend individual therapists.

IF you are in the HSE, there are specific complaints systems - check out their website. I think it's called Your Service Your Say. Private services should also have complaints systems.

I'm going to close this thread as it is a psychology forum, not for addressing individual negative experiences.
