    Hi folks,

Where is sign on tonight? Is it the same place as all the road races at Black Bull?

Is the course an out and back to the roundabout just past Batterstown?

    Cheers,
    Ross

    Orwell forum says:
10 Mile TT will start in Batterstown at 7.00.
Lap of Mullagh circuit finishing about mile after Hatchet pub on the Dunboyne/Summerhill Road

I presume the circuit is this: http://app.strava.com/segments/710789

And the forecast is "inclement" to say the least.
Gale force winds and heavy rain.
    Should be.... fun?

As per last race, my bike is still in hospital but I'm going to cycle out on the commuter. Surely the rules for mudguards etc only apply to bunch racing.
Depending on wind direction I might leave the pannier on :-D

    Thanks for that,

Looks like those gales will be a tailwind, then a crosswind, then a headwind. yay!

Dream on. It'll be a headwind, a headwind and then a headwind. Just like last year

Out of curiosity, I was looking at top times for this last year:

    1 23'18 S
    2 23'42 S
    3 23'48 S
    4 23'51 S
    5 24'04 SS
    6 24'34 S
    7 24'34 S
    8 24'39 S
    9 24'39 SS
    10 24'40 S

Interested to see how this year's times compare. Particularly my own after eating half a packet of custard creams at lunch.

Just out of interest, does everyone rock up to this with TT-Bikes, skinsuits and pointy hats? Or do people do it with their bog-standard bikes and clip on aero bars?

Not taking part tonight, just for future reference.

pulling numbers out of thin air, Id say: 20% skinsuits, 30% TT bikes, 30% pointy hats

Both and everything in between, and a fair few with no aerobars either.

I'm doing it on regular road bike, regular helmet, regular kit, no aero bars. But I don't expect to win. :p

I've never done a TT before but based on my own training garmin files, they're savage times. 24 minutes is 40kph average. Apart from league races I very rarely see over 30kph average over a spin. Even at the races, it's usually 38, maybe 39.

TT gear makes a big difference.

    To put this into perspective...

...though the UK courses used for those sub-18 minute times would be a fair bit faster than Batterstown - straight and well surfaced.

:) Are you taking part on that thing? If someone catches you, just drop a mudguard or a bell ;)

Doesn't look like it's going to be nice tonight. Waiting on a courier with my new Aero helmet! Don't think it'll be here in time.

To get in at around 23' you have to average 41kph. Did the circuit on Monday, nice and calm and managed it in 27'30. So anything under 30 and I'm happy tonight.

26'50. I'm happy enough with that. Won't be in the top 10 with it, but it's better than last year and better than last Monday! :) Though old wind on the finishing straight. Didn't expect the gravel surface as it wasn't there on Monday but overall happy and delighted I didn't fall over on my first day using the aero bars!

According to Strava, 27:06 for me, almost 2 mins better than last year, happy with that.

That was fun. None of my gadgets were working so I did it on "perceived suffering". Used my road bike with clip-ons, a disc, a 50mm front and a sperm hat.

Too much braking but I'm a coward in the wet. 25:19 according to the time sheet. Not particularly looking forward to the 25/40. Must book a holiday for that one.

Is it childish of me that my target was to beat Lumen? I'm determined to show that all the aero gear is of no advantage at the end of the day. Recorded time was 25'06". WHERE IS YOUR GOD OF SCIENCE NOW?

I feel only pleased to be of assistance in your target setting. Well done :)

You might pick a more challenging target though. I am rapidly approaching vets age and racing in semi-limit. :pac:

Strava says 24.59 for me, but recorded time was 25.06, so be prepared for a few seconds' slippage.

Happy enough with the ride. Regular everything, cycled out, thought I'd be early, but wasn't, 45th starter. Good pace with the tailwind, was aiming to keep total average over 40kmph if possible. Managed to do that, and a bit more, until the last stretch. That headwind just sapped my energy, pace just dropped and dropped.

Head's not screwed on right today though. Left my rainjacket in someone's boot, forgot to wait at the finish line to retrieve it. Food was in the pocket. Stop at a garage on the way home, saturated. Go to buy some jellies, realise I've left my wallet in work. Get home, start packing for weekend trip, realise passport is not at home. Sorted now. If someone hears of a white translucent raincape around, let me know.

I've said it before (only last week) and I'll say it again:

"Should be extra points for the hard men, and one woman, that turn up in this weather."

Think there might have been two women this week too actually, but fair play to all, regardless of sex/colour/creed/orientation. Tough night for lads such as myself trying out tri bars for the first time ever, and judging by wobbly warm ups, I certainly wasn't the only one. I neglected to bring my turbo cos I thought I might look like a spanner but it seems it was the thing to do! Was surprised at how comfortable, once I got used to them, the tri bars were to use, but on their debut night I could certainly have done without the 90 mph cross winds and the freshly deposited knee-deep gravel....

Anyway, pootled around for meself, thinking I was a right goer until Shane Baker (who had started 2 minutes behind me!) passed me on the fcukin Mullagh :o. I briefly debated the wisdom of jumping on his back wheel but by the time my right hand had reached back for the gear lever he had "whong-whong-whong'ed" into the distance. I did restore some masculinity by similarly taking the scalp later of the lad who had started before me! :)

Being my first time trial I didn't really know how to play it, my primary concern was to not go too hard and blow up, so I might have been a bit conservative but having said that it's not like I had untold reserves on the flat 4k home into the wind.

All in all, good craic. I'll have to wait for official results for my time. I did ask at the finish but I can't remember what it was. It was a 26 something, and the something was either 50 or 11, and I can't remember which!

Anyway. 'Twas a start. Would be interesting to put in a bit of practice for such an event an see how I could improve. It's a whole other mindset and physiological set to be riding start to finish for 80+k all the time, and then suddenly do a 16k.

-What's the deal with handicaps actually, as a matter of interest, in terms of the league. How do they work the different groups (limit to scratch). Are there points within each group or do they offer time handicaps or what's the deal?

I think points are given like a DMS, first six in each group.

For the TT champs, medals are given to first three of each club - no handicaps.

I didn't see the results for last year, but in 2010 there was a Semi-limiter with 23'32, a Limiter with 24'57, and another with 25'11. They were all from UCD.

So without knowing anything about this years results, I speculate that UCD riders in the lower groups will do very well. :)

Top three SL last year were 25.45 (#20), then 25.48 (a junior, whom we were talking about last night :)) and 25.55. All were Orwell.

Likewise, glad to be a good minute man:-)
I was going to leave the pannier on seeing all the disc wheels but was persuaded against. Paid for that by having to cycle back to the start before cycling home in the rain.

I don't know my official time as it was scribbled over on the sheet - probably due to the fairing (mudguards) and starter grip (rack) failing uci scrutineering, but the garmin indicated 28:00.

Must search for last year's thread for my time then.

There was definitely someone with panniers. I had assumed it was Idleater from my vantage point on the left turn after the roundabout.

Well done to all who came out. It looked fairly painful and that was with a tailwind where I was stationed. I've never done a TT and thinking the 25M one later in the season will be a painful way to break that cherry :D

btw I have an aero water bottle that the rider on the Brian Quirke bike lost if anyone knows him (can't recall which club). I can bring it along next Thursday.

Didn't really enjoy that, but pleasantly surprised by my time. I definitely prefer pushing against a hill than the wind. Flying up the main road with a tailwind was fun though.

Interesting to note that, if my maths is right, I'd have to increase my average power by >15% to beat Shane Baker's time (though he did have all the aero gear).
