ok my problem is i have a 2001 berlingo van 1.9 dsl, she's a bit of a dog van, i got it for free off my previous boss because they wanted me to have a van for work but didnt want to tax and insure it so we agreed id have van for free and pay rest.
Anyway its not worth anything anymore, 170k miles, 2 years ago it had alot of money spent on engine (600 euro) and ive noticed that the water light is coming on and smoke coming out the rear, it doesnt seem to be loosing any power and light goes off for periods, plus the smoke does go away, im sorry if im confusing, anyway i cant really afford a new car at mo plus have tax/insurance/test till nov,
i think it might be a head gasket but im no expert, if it is how long can i keep her running for, any tips to keep her going till nov at least, if it is the end for her ill have to buy something really cheap, im not sinking any more money into this.

    any help kind folks, cheers

Top up the reservoir with coolant/water mix daily or as required to prevent the light coming on, otherwise it won't last any time at all.

How much water would it use typically?

Check if there's any water spots under the car in the mornings. Also check for leaks around the radiator. It's possible that it's a headgasket failure but you will need to diagnose yourself :)

Those engines are notorious from getting airlocked if the coolant is not put in properly...

What colour is the smoke you are noticing?
If it's not white and the van isn't losing much coolant than it might well not be the HG at all.
