Front Garden Wall Dispute

I'm in a terrace so share a front garden wall on both sides with my neighbours. I had repainted the top of the walls years ago and the last time they were painted it was done by my neighbours on both sides, left side white and right side black. They both are now in a bad way so I decided to paint them as I was painting outside anyway. I started with the left and while I was preparing my neighbour commented on what a tough job it was. The first day I painted the top of the pillar - overpainted the white with a creamy colour. The next day I painted the top of the wall and later put a second coat on it. Today my neighbour's wife said that the wall belonged to them and they want it back to white. I was just on the way into the house and was a bit surprised because I thought the wall was shared so I just said ok. I'm not sure now if I'm supposed to go out and get white paint and repaint it or whether they will do it. And I can't understand why they didn't say anything while I was doing the preparation. I honestly thought I was doing us all a favour by painting it. Should I repaint it?

You need to sit down and talk to your neighbours and discuss the wall, whether it is a party wall or if it is built entirely on one side of the property divide and discuss it rationally.

Thanks. It doesn't really bother me if they repaint the wall just so long as they don't think that I will. I was trying to figure out how they think the wall is theirs, it is literally between the houses and on either side it has the gas meter for each house so it looks like a shared wall. I think I'll just say nothing and hope they get over it. I won't even attempt to paint the wall shared with the other neighbours without saying something - the only reason I didn't start with that one was because it is black. I just wish that if people are going to take personal ownership of the walls between the gardens that they would give them a new coat of paint now and again!
