Hi folks I have a newly installed summer time valve to provide hot water to our cylinder only. Does anyone know how long you should leave the heat on for to heat a 42" cylinder? Gas should be cheaper the electric immersion

30 mins morning and evening with the immersion normally does it but the same on the boiler doesn't get it nearly warm enough, the valve is closed to the rads, the cylinder valve is completely open and there're are no thermostats except the one on the boiler.

    Cheers
    Hick

    Is it a 42"x18" or a 42"x15"?

It all depends on the out put temperature of the boiler. If it's set low it will take longer to heat the water and will only heat it to that temp. If you increase the boiler temp it will make the cylinder hotter and get there quicker (i'm taking it has no system controls). If the boiler was set to 70 or 75 it would take about 1hr 10mins. It will take longer but the coil in the cylinder gives you more stored hot water than the immersion.
